Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent breed and excel at any task they're given, from learning tricks to competing in the show ring or agility courses. As most know, they also come in a range of sizes, making them suitable to many different environments.
The Poodle coat features distinctive fluffy fur that can be trimmed in many different styles. It can come in three distinct varieties: standard, corded, or clipped. The coat of the Standard Poodle is dense and curly, while the corded coat is made up of tightly twisted curls all the way down to the skin. The most common coat style is a clipped coat featuring a shorter style while still retaining the signature curls. All three types of coat texture require regular brushing and maintenance to prevent matting.
Poodles most certainly do have special dietary needs, but what these needs are depend on the size and age of the poodle. Generally, poodles need diets formulated for their size and age; puppy poodles require specifically balanced diets since they require more calories and protein for growth. For adults, the food should be designed to help them maintain an optimal weight to prevent joint and musculoskeletal issues. Poodles with additional health issues may need a special diet as well.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Poodle requires time, dedication, and consistent effort. Begin by educating yourself about the breed’s special needs and the daily routine that will ensure your pup has a healthy, secure, and happy life. Spend time socializing and training your new pup. This will lay a foundation of trust and acceptance of your leadership and help prevent behavioral problems from arising later in life.
Poodles come in four basic size variations Standard, Miniature, Toy, and Teacup. Standard Poodles are the largest size, typically growing to a height of 15 inches and/or weighing between 45-70 pounds. Miniature Poodles tend to be between 10 and 15 inches tall and can weigh 15-17 pounds. Toy Poodles are the smallest variation, growing to a height of 10 inches or less and can weigh up to 6-9 pounds.
Poodles are well-known for their love of water and swimming. Generally, they find swimming quite enjoyable and make great swimmers. As an intelligent breed, poodles have an instinctive understanding of the currents and enjoy the water's natural environment. Most poodles appreciate swimming in a pool, although if given the opportunity, they often prefer swimming in a lake or a river as it allows them to explore and investigate and enjoy it for longer periods of time. Swimming is a great way for poodles to get needed exercise as they can propel themselves through the water with ease.
Poodles are generally friendly animals and can get along with other pets pretty well, depending on the individual temperament of the particular Poodle and the other pets. It's important to properly introduce them to one another and supervise their initial interactions. In addition, socialization with other animals should begin at an early age so that your Poodle can be accustomed to interacting with other kinds of pets as he or she grows up. With the right environment and proper training, Poodles tend to have good relationships with pets like cats and other dogs, too.
The amount of time per day you need to dedicate to training your Poodle will depend on your pup and what experience they have with commands. As a general rule, the more training they receive, the quicker and more effective the commands become. Generally, you should dedicate at least 15 minutes per day to Poodle training though it can be extended to up to 30 minutes depending on the type of training they are receiving. If your pup is just learning basic commands then 15 minutes per day is suggested.
