Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a breed of dog that is known for its intelligence and proud posture. Originating in Germany, the Poodle is one of the oldest breeds and has been around since the 15th century. It is easily recognizable thanks to its distinctive curly hair. Poodles come in three sizes--standard, miniature, and toy--and its coat can be trimmed in various fancy shapes. They can make the perfect family dog and are relatively easy to train. Poodles do not shed, making them a desirable breed for people with allergies.
Poodles are considered hypoallergenic and often low-shedding. They are known to be one of the breeds with a lowto non-shedding coat, as they do not produce the same amount of dander and hair that many other breeds do. Poodles often produce far less hair than most other dog breeds, which can make them easy to manage, and their coats are often described as non-shedding.
Poodles are usually categorized as either standard or toy breeds. Depending on their breed size, toy poodles require different dietary needs compared to standard poodles. Generally, poodles require a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet that contains lean proteins like chicken, liver, and fish. Additionally, poodles enjoy healthier treats like vegetables, fruits, and grains.
Preparing your home for a new Poodle can be an exciting task! A few important things to consider when getting ready for your pup include making a safe area that offers plenty of room to run and play, such as a fenced-in backyard; providing comfortable places to sleep with blankets or a dog bed; ensuring that any hazardous items (e.g. chemicals, poisonous plants) are safely stored away; and having all necessary items (e.g. leash, collar, toys, food and water dishes) prepared and ready.
Generally speaking, how big your Poodle puppy will be when full grown will depend on the particular breed, with Toy, Miniature, and Standard Poodle breeds ranging in size. Toy Poodles typically weigh around 6-9 pounds, Miniature Poodles weigh in around 10-15 pounds, and Standard Poodles can reach up to 70 pounds. Additionally, the sex of your puppy will also make a difference in its size as females tend to be smaller than males.
An ideal number of minutes to walk your Poodle each day would vary depending on his age, breed, and physical condition. Generally, a Poodle should be walked for at least 30 minutes a day more if possible! If you have an older Poodle, opt for shorter and more frequent walks to avoid overstressing their joints. For younger Poodles, you can extend the walking times, but be sure to take regular breaks to ensure that your dog doesn't overdo it and you don't drift away from his exercise schedule.
Poodles can typically get along well with other pets, though it largely depends upon the individual dog's personality and the way they are socialized. Poodles can be social animals that thrive when they are in the company of other animals especially other Poodles. Early and consistent socialization is key in order to ensure that your Poodle is comfortable and accepting of other animals. Properly introducing a Poodle to your existing pets, within the appropriate timeframe, can help to establish a positive relationship between them.
The amount of time required to effectively train a Poodle depends on the age and experience level of the dog. Generally, an experienced Poodle will require around 10 minutes of training each day, while younger or less experienced ones likely need anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes per day. Therefore, the minimum time one should commit to training a Poodle is at least 30 minutes per day, but no more than 60 minutes. Depending on the desired outcome, additional time may be needed.
