Questions & Answers
Poodles are an incredibly unique breed of dog. While most people focus on their prominent, curly coats, they have many interesting traits that make them truly special. From their intelligence and trainability, to their low-shedding coats, Poodles are an ideal breed for many families and individuals. They are also incredibly athletic and graceful, making them a perfect choice for those looking for an active and engaging canine companion. Beyond that, Poodles have a very loyal and loving disposition and can form a strong bond with their owners.
Poodles are among the lowest shedding dogs, which makes them a breed to consider for people who suffer from allergies. Poodles produce very little dander, which are particles released from the fur and skin of most dogs and can cause reactions in people who are sensitive to them. Although no dog can be considered 100% hypoallergenic, Poodles have often been referred to as one of the most hypoallergenic breeds due to their low-shedding coats.
Poodles do indeed have special dietary needs due to their size and breed. Small dietary adjustments should be taken to ensure that your Poodle's nutritional requirements are being met. For example, they require higher levels of fat per ounce of food than other breeds. Additionally, their physical structure and exercise needs should be taken into consideration to ensure that they get the proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins. It's important to consult your veterinarian for guidance in meeting these needs.
Before getting a Poodle, some essential items you should buy include a collar and leash, dog bed, food and water bowls, brush, toys, nail clippers, Poodle-specific grooming supplies, puppy pads, treats, a crate, and a good quality dog shampoo. Additionally, depending on the age of your Poodle, you may also need to invest in puppy-proofing materials such as baby gates and a sturdy playpen. It's also important to purchase pet insurance to ensure that all veterinary costs are covered in the event that your Poodle becomes ill or injured.
Poodles come in four distinct sizes: toy, miniature, medium, and standard. The toy Poodle is bred to be no more than 10 inches in height at the shoulder and will generally weigh between 4 and 6 pounds. The miniature is typically sized at 11 to 14 inches and will weigh between 6 and 9 pounds. The medium Poodle is 15 to 18 inches tall and weighs between 15 and 20 pounds; and the standard Poodle measures more than 19 inches and must weigh at least 20 pounds.
Poodles are highly active dogs that need plenty of daily exercise. It is important to provide them with both physical and mental stimulation daily. Depending on the age and breed size of your Poodle, they should get at least 30 minutes of running or walking exercise each day. For senior and giant breeds, this should be shorter and slower in order to help guard against joint and hip problems. Playing games such as fetch, agility, flyball and even tracking or search and rescue are good options to challenge and tire them out mentally and physically.
Poodles can make wonderful family companions, including with children. Generally, poodles are known to be good-natured, intelligent, and affectionate with children. As with any breed, it's important to train, socialize, and supervise a poodle around kids. With proper training and love, poodles can be great, loyal family pets and often show extra care and gentleness towards kids. Additionally, due to their low-shedding coats, they can be a great choice for families with allergies.
Training a Poodle can be relatively easy, although it may require some patience. Poodles are highly intelligent and have a willingness to learn, making them ideal candidates for teaching obedience commands. This breed of dog is also responsive to positive reinforcement, so rewards for good behavior can make the training process enjoyable and successful. However, all dogs learn differently and Poodles, in particular, can have a stubborn streak, so a consistent and gentle approach is key.
