Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a breed of dog originally bred as a gundog or sniffing/tracking dog. The breed comes in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. A Poodle has a thick curly coat that is typically groomed into a unique coiffed style, and most commonly come in black, white, or a combination of black and white colors. This breed is also known for its intelligence and loyalty, making them an ideal pet for those looking for a loving, devoted companion.
Poodles are a breed known for their low-shedding coats which makes them well suited for the home with people who experience allergies. The American Kennel Club (AKC) classifies the Poodle as a hypoallergenic dog, which means that they have a reduced presence of allergens in their coat and saliva. Typically, they will only shed very lightly compared to other breeds and will require regular brushing to prevent their coats from matting.
Poodles should not be fed chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, or anything containing caffeine as these can all be toxic in large quantities. Nuts, macadamia, and xylitol should also be avoided because they can cause pancreatitis. It is best to stick to feeding your poodle a balanced diet of specifically made dog foods that are designed to provide all of the essential nutrients. Table foods should be avoided as they often contain unnecessary fats.
Preparing your home for your new Poodle should start before you even bring them home, as small changes can go a long way to making them feel safe and secure. Of course, just like any pet, basic items like food and water bowls, toys, and a bed should have a permanent spot in the house. Additionally, baby gates should be installed in order to keep your pup confined to certain areas, like the living room or bedroom, and out of trouble. As active puppies, your pup is sure to need lots of activities.
Poodles come in three distinct sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard. The Toy Poodle is the smallest size, typically between 10 to 15 inches in height, weighing 4 to 6 pounds. The Miniature Poodle stands at 10 to 15 inches as well and can be heavier weighing in at 10 to 15 pounds. The Standard Poodle is the largest size, usually between 15 to 22 inches at the shoulder, and weighing anywhere from 45 to 70 pounds. The difference in sizes is accomplished by breeding dogs with different parents, while still retaining the proper traits of a Poodle.
How many minutes per day you should spend walking your Poodle depends on their age, health and activity level. A good rule of thumb is to walk your Poodle at least twice a day for at least 10 minutes at a time, but for very active breeds, an additional 20-30 minutes every day can be beneficial. Puppies that are still young typically need at least twice the amount of walking time as adults, with around 5-15 minutes walking for each month of age. That means a 3 months old pup needs a minimum of 15 minutes per outing.
Poodles are known for being intelligent, loyal, and loving, so it's not surprising that many families have found that Poodles make wonderful companions to their children. Poodles are usually great with kids as they tend to be friendly and outgoing with their family members. Poodles are active and generally quite playful, so they can provide the perfect amount of energy and stimulation for a child's personality. Plus, Poodles are usually quite patient and gentle, often making them more tolerant of children's occasional roughness.
Training your Poodle can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. However, the most important aspect of training your Poodle is to ensure that you plan ahead and utilize the best training techniques. Before you begin training, familiarize yourself with the basic commands such as "sit" and "stay", and determine how you want to reward your Poodle when they obey commands. If you are teaching commands such as "sit", start by saying the command and reward your Poodle with treats or your chosen reward when they obey.
