Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest breeds of domesticated dog, likely originating in Germany in the 1500s. Unlike other breeds, a poodle's coat is a combination of hair and fur, making them low shedding and hypoallergenic. Another unique feature of poodles is that they come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Additionally, their breed is one of the most intelligent animals around, often used as service and therapy dogs.
The Poodle has a luxurious, aesthetically-pleasing coat that many admire. Its dense, curly fur protects it from cold weather and water, making it a great choice for both indoors and outdoors. Although it does require a fair amount of grooming to maintain its lovely, fluffy look, with regular brushing and clipping, it's easy to keep this dog looking glamorous. The fur can be trimmed into a range of styles to suit any occasion, from the classic ‘Continental Clip’ to a ‘Puppy Cut’ with a little extra length on the legs.
Poodles are toy breeds and can be quite delicate, so it's important to know what not to feed them. As with all dogs, they shouldn't be given chocolate, coffee, or anything with caffeine, tree nuts, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, or anything that contains xylitol. Additionally, they should stay away from foods high in fatty acids like pork, duck, or any other fatty meats. Onions and garlic can also cause harm, so it's best to avoid giving these to a Poodle.
To prepare for your new Poodle, it is important to puppy-proof your home. Start by covering or hiding floors and furniture that could be chewed on, and securing cords and wires. Make sure drawers, cabinets, and doors are childproofed. Providing chew toys or puzzle toys can help keep your pup occupied. Additionally, be sure to puppy-proof the yard as well. Outdoors, use escape-proof fencing and beware of dangerous plants or hidden hazards. Provide plenty of places for your pup to rest and exercise, including a designated potty place.
Poodles come in various sizes, ranging from a tiny Toy Poodle with a height of 10 inches (25cm) or smaller, all the way up to a Standard Poodle that can exceed 15 inches (38cm) or even taller. Toy Poodles are the most popular, but Miniature Poodles come in at a close second, and are slightly bigger with heights of up to 15 inches (38 cm). The Standard Poodle is the largest size and they usually weigh between 40-70 pounds (18-32 kg).
Absolutely! Taking your Poodle running can be a great way to get some exercise and have a bonding experience with your pup. Many owners find that their Poodles love running it provides them with a chance to engage in an activity that they particularly enjoy and to expend some of the pent-up energy that all dogs have. Be sure to check with your veterinarian to ensure that your pup is healthy enough to run and to get advice about how far and how often you should take him or her out. A good rule of thumb is to start very slowly, building up endurance over time.
Poodles are known for being intelligent and sociable dogs and as a result they usually get along well with other pets. Poodles are usually friendly and patient with animals of all sizes from cats and birds to larger animals like horses. Generally, providing socialization and obedience training, along with proper supervision, can help ensure that Poodles learn to get along with other animals and establish a healthy relationship with them. It's essential for Poodles to be exposed to other animals, in order to learn to get along with them.
The amount of time you should dedicate to training your Poodle each day depends on a variety of factors, such as the age of your dog, how well they respond to commands and how long you would like to take to complete the training. Generally, it's recommended to spend between 10 and 20 minutes per day so that the dog can master the basics. However, for more advanced and comprehensive training, you may need to dedicate up to 45 minutes per day, split into several smaller training sessions. Ultimately, it really depends on the individual Poodle's personality and training requirements.
