Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, thought to have originated back in the 1500s. They come in four distinct sizes Standard, Toy, Miniature and Teacup with their coats in a range of colors including black, white, brown, grey, and cream. Poodles are originally from Germany and their name is thought to have derived from their German word “pudeln”, which means “to splash in water”.
Poodle coats are unique among dog breeds. Their trademark look comes from the curly, dense fur and double coat that provide them with a great deal of insulation against the elements. They have a silky, low-shedding coat in a variety of colors depending on the variation. Standard Poodles have a solid black, white or chocolate color coat while Toy and Miniature Poodles may also come in apricot, red, cafe-au-lait, cream and silver.
Poodles do have some special dietary needs that should be kept in mind when owning a Poodle. They are a breed that can be prone to obesity, so they should be carefully monitored to ensure they are eating just the right amounts of food. Poodles may benefit from eating foods that contain higher levels of Vitamin D and calcium to help keep their bones and teeth strong. A diet that contains ample amounts of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals are important for a Poodle's health, but also it's important to not overfeed them.
Before getting a Poodle, it is important to make sure you have all the essentials you need. Purchase some quality food and treats, a collar and leash, a bed, a toy or two, a travel crate, shampoo and other grooming tools, and any necessary health and medical supplies. Keep in mind that Poodles have a double-layer coat, so be sure to brush regularly to prevent matting. You may also want to invest in a toothbrush and toothpaste to help maintain the health of your pup's teeth.
Poodles come in standard, miniature, and toy sizes, which vary based upon weight and height. Standard poodles are typically slightly larger than miniature and toy poodles, weighing anywhere from 35 to 70 lbs. and standing between 15 and 21 inches tall. Miniature poodles weigh in between 10 and 15 lbs. and stand between 10 and 15 inches tall. Toy poodles are the smallest, weighing between 4 and 6 lbs. and standing between 7 and 12 inches tall.
Absolutely. Taking your Poodle running is a great way to get regular exercise and provide it with mental and physical stimulation. However, as long as your Poodle is healthy enough to exercise, there are a few safety considerations to keep in mind. First, avoid running on hot days as Poodles are less tolerant to heat than other breeds. Second, pay attention to your Poodle’s breathing and panting as any signs of distress should be immediately addressed. Finally, it is best practice to take water on your run for small breaks to encourage hydration and prevent exhaustion.
Poodles are an excellent choice for families. Not only are they incredibly intelligent and highly trainable, they are also loyal, loving, and playful companions. They typically get along well with children, other pets, and strangers; and their fluffy amber and apricot coats make them incredibly endearing. Their low-shedding coat requires regular maintenance, but with a little extra effort each week, their coat will always look great. For active families, they are also great jogging buddies and love to be involved in family activities.
Poodles are widely considered to be an intelligent breed of dog, which have been bred for their intelligence and actively trained to be obedient and successful at a variety of tasks. This is evidenced by their proficiency in agility and obedience competition, and their capacity for quick learning. Furthermore, their array of simple and complex tricks attests to their intelligence. While other breeds of dogs have been bred to perform one job, poodles are bred to think and problem solve, thereby retaining their intelligence over generations.
