Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a unique breed of dog known for its intelligence, loyal nature, and sturdy body. Poodles are often recognizable by their unique coat styles and come in various sizes and colors. The most common coat style is the ‘puppy cut’, which is a slightly trimmed style. Smaller Poodles can weigh up to 6-9 pounds, while standard Poodles can weigh up to 40-70 pounds. Regardless of the size, all Poodles are considered one breed and the American Kennel Club calls them Non-Sporting Dogs.
Poodles do not usually cause allergies; however, people who are prone to allergies may still react to their fur, dander, or saliva. If you have allergies, the best way to determine is to spend time with a poodle and observe if you experience any reactions. Additionally, a doctor can provide testing to see if you have a reaction to a poodle. It could be that you are allergic to something else in the environment and not the poodle itself.
Poodles do typically have special dietary needs due to their size and activity level. It is important to make sure a Poodle's diet is made up of high quality ingredients from sources that will provide the proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals for their needs. For optimal health, it is recommended to feed Poodles nutrient-dense and digestible food that is also low in fat. Additionally, their diet should be tailored to their individual activity level, age, any diagnosed medical conditions, and breed size so that they are getting the proper nutrition for their specific needs.

Poodles usually have to be groomed every 3-4 months and require daily walks to keep trimmed up. Poodles also need mental stimulation, as they are an intelligent breed and can easily become bored if not kept busy. If you are not able to provide the necessary exercise and mental stimulation, consider enrolling them in a doggy daycare to keep them mentally and physically fit.
Poodles are available in a variety of sizes and can generally be classified into four size varieties: Toy Poodle, Miniature Poodle, Standard Poodle and Royal-sized Poodle. Toy Poodles are the smallest of the breeds and typically weigh around 6 to 9 pounds. They are usually between 10 and 12 inches in height. Miniature Poodles are larger than Toy Poodles and typically weigh in at 10 to 15 pounds. They are usually between 11 and 14 inches tall. Standard Poodles are the biggest of the breeds and usually weigh 45 to 70 pounds.
Poodles require a good amount of exercise to stay healthy. Typically, Poodles should be active for at least 30 to 60 minutes each day. Depending on the dog's activity level and age, this could range from a brisk walk to an active jog. Swimming is also an excellent form of exercise for Poodles. Off-leash exercise in a fenced-in area is also beneficial. Keep in mind that safety should be the top priority when deciding on an exercise plan for your Poodle.
