Questions & Answers
Poodles are an iconic breed that have been around for centuries. They are very intelligent and highly trainable. Due to their natural athleticism, Poodles excel in many types of activities such as agility, flyball, and water retrieving. Their unique wiry coats require regular grooming, as much of their dead fur should be clipped away every 6-8 weeks and brushed frequently. Poodles are generally friendly and make great family pets. They need daily exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and healthy.
Poodles are not necessarily hypoallergenic. Poodle hair does not shed, which makes them desirable for people with allergies; however, hair itself is not what typically triggers allergies. It is the dandruff and saliva that dogs produce that typically triggers allergies. So, while poodles may produce less dandruff and saliva compared to other dog breeds, they can still cause an allergic reaction if you are sensitive. Moreover, many Poodle breeders will mix their poodles with other breeds which can alter the hypoallergenic qualities.
Poodles should not be fed human food that is high in fat, salt, or sugar as these can lead to medical issues, such as obesity, organ problems, pancreatitis, and diabetes. While healthy table scraps can be given in moderation, it’s best to stick to a quality commercial diet specifically formulated for poodles. Also, never feed poodles cooked bones, which can splinter and cause internal damage; only give poodles raw hides, which can be purchased at any pet store.
Preparing for a new Poodle can seem overwhelming, but with the right knowledge and resources it will be a smooth transition. First, consider brushing up on the breed-specific care requirements such as general grooming, nail trimming, and training needs. Doing some research online or perhaps consulting a veterinarian about the health and wellness needs of the breed will help you anticipate any medical care you may need to provide. You should also decide what kind of nutrition you want to offer your Poodle and stock up on quality food and treats.
Poodles are widely recognized for their small size and can typically be considered small dogs. Although specific size requirements vary based on breed standards, Poodles typically range in size from toy to standard. The smallest variety, the toy Poodle, is usually less than 10 inches tall and weighs between 5 to 10 pounds. Their unique coat characteristics, their big personality, and their intelligence make them a popular companion dog for a wide range of owners. Although they are classified as a small breed, Poodles are known for their strength and stamina and are an ideal fit for active owners throughout their lifespan.
Previously thought of as a 'teacup' lapdog, Poodles are actually quite active and energetic. They have a moderate energy level and enjoy lots of daily physical and mental exercise. They love to explore their environment, and can usually be found chasing after balls, sticks, and Frisbees. Poodles typically find any opportunities for activity and exercise highly rewarding, and can be just as active or perhaps even more so than other breeds. In addition to physical activity, Poodles need plenty of mental stimulation as well and thrive on interactive activities such as agility and obedience.
Poodles are often very gentle and loving towards children, making them a great choice for a family pet. They have an overall friendly demeanor and make a fantastic companion for children. Not only are Poodles inherently very patient animals, but they are also highly intelligent, making them receptive to commands and instruction. They can learn new tricks, which may make them more enjoyable for kids. Their non-shedding coats make them a great choice for those with allergies, making it easier for kids to interact with them.
Though Poodles may not be the first breed that comes to mind when one thinks of intelligence, research indicates that they certainly deserve the recognition. Studies have found that Poodles have a remarkable ability to learn new commands rather quickly and to remember them over extended periods. In addition, these smart dogs are excellent problem solvers. Their cleverness and eagerness to please make them easy to train. You can even find stories that demonstrate their aptitude for understanding the concept of cause and effect, an impressive sign of intellect.
