Questions & Answers
Poodles are a distinctly recognizable breed of dog and are often classified in the “Toy Group”; however, some organizations have reclassified them as a “non-sporting” breed. Regardless of which category they fit in, Poodles are considered an intelligent, loyal and alert breed of dog. On the breed standard, they are described as having a proud, dignified appearance and requiring regular brushing and clipping of their extremely thick and curly fur.
Poodles have elegant, single-layer coats that can come in a variety of colors. Their coats tend to be curly and slightly wavy, which helps keep them warm when swimming or playing in the water. They have a soft undercoat and a firmer outer coat to protect them from the elements and help keep dirt and debris away. The texture of the coat can vary, ranging from corded or uniform to wavy or even curly. They also require frequent brushing to keep their coats healthy and free from mats.
Poodles absolutely do have special dietary needs. Unlike other dog breeds, they should not be fed a standard, regular dog food. Poodles require a specialized, nutritionally-balanced diet to maintain their signature wiry, curly coat and svelte frame. Premium brands of dog food that have been specially formulated for poodles are great sources of nutrition for these particular breeds. Additionally, if you are a poodle owner, you should pay close attention to the ingredients in the dog food you provide and look for high-quality proteins, healthy fats, and fiber.
Before bringing your Poodle home, you should take some steps to prepare your home. First, make sure there are no small items your Poodle might be tempted to chew that can be hazardous to them. Some good ideas to make sure your home is chew toy free are to make sure to put away any shoes, jewelry, or generally any small items out of reach. By keeping items off the floor you can also help avoid any potential tripping accidents. Next, provide spaces that are exclusively for your new Poodle to call their own.
Poodles come in a variety of sizes, each size described by its height in inches. Toy Poodles, the smallest type, are measured at 10 inches or fewer in height, while Miniature Poodles grow to between 10-15 inches tall. A Small Standard Poodle is usually 15-17 inches, and sometimes referred to as a Medium Poodle. The next size is the Medium Standard Poodle, which grows to between 17-20 inches high. Finally, the large Standard (or “Giant”) Poodle stands more than 20 inches tall.
Absolutely! Many Poodles enjoy the activity of running and are well-suited for the task. Although a long-distance run may be challenging for your pet due to their small stature, moderate running is an excellent way to keep your Poodle healthy and active. It's important that your Poodle know proper commands like "heel" and "sit" to ensure safe practice; if you are uncertain about proper conditioning techniques, consult with a veterinarian or dog trainer. A good rule of thumb is to start small and gradually increase your runs, allowing time for rest in between.
Poodles can make excellent family pets and often 'get along' well with young children. Generally speaking, these playful and energetic dogs have a friendly, easy-going nature that is fairly well suited for households with kids. Poodles often have a protective nature when it comes to the family they love, and adults cannot be the only source of attention for a Poodle. Therefore, children can provide an excellent companion for a Poodle, as long as they are supervised and taught how to handle the dog in a gentle and thoughtful manner.
The amount of time you need to spend training your Poodle will depend on the individual, as each dog will likely have different needs. Generally speaking, it is recommended to spend anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes per day with your Poodle in order to ensure a comprehensive and effective training program. This time can be broken down into multiple sessions spread throughout the day which will give your pup the best chance of success and will foster an even closer bond between you and your pet.
