Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent and active breed of dog that are classified as a working or non-sporting breed according to the American Kennel Club. Poodles make great family pets due to their friendly and devoted nature, and come in three distinct sizes: Standard, Miniature and Toy. All varieties of Poodle have long, angular heads, square-shaped muzzles, straight legs, dark almond-shaped eyes and, of course, their signature curly coat that comes in a wide array of colors.
Poodles are considered to be one of the most hypoallergenic and non-shedding breeds, meaning their coats tend to trap less dander and hair. Poodles come in many sizes and varieties, including Toy, Miniature and Standard. Their coats can range from curly to corded, both of which have hair instead of fur, and neither of which will shed excessively. Of course, all breeds will shed some hair, and Poodles are no exception.
When deciding what to feed your Poodle, you should always opt for a healthy, high-quality food that will meet their specific dietary needs. Dog breed size, age, activity level, and specific health conditions can all influence what would be the best option for your pet. Look for food that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Opt for a food made with fresh, quality ingredients that also has appropriate levels of the vitamins and minerals they need. College is also a good idea to discuss with your vet what specific foods would be best for your pet.
Poodles may have certain specialized requirements based on their size and breed. Standard Poodles tend to require more strenuous exercise than Toy or Miniature varieties, while Standard Poodles should receive more exercise than smaller breeds. Some varieties may require more frequent grooming, such as clipping and brushing, as their coats tend to grow and change quickly. All Poodles should have access to plenty of fresh, clean water and a balanced diet formulated specifically for their breed and size.
Poodles are medium-sized dogs, not considered to be a large breed. While some Poodles may appear large due to their tall stature, most are just between 15 and 22 inches at the withers and in the 20-44lb range, making them smaller than most standard-sized breeds. While it's true that Poodles come in three sizes, Standard, Miniature, and Toy, even the Standard size will typically fit into the medium-sized breed category.
Poodles have a natural affinity for swimming, due to their webbed feet and water-resistant coat. Their temperament also makes them ideal swimming companions; they are smart, obedient, and eager to please. For most poodles, swimming can be great fun, and they can enjoy it for extended periods. Just remember to warm them up with a dry towel afterward, because their single coat means they don’t have the water-shedding ability of double-coated breeds like Golden Retrievers.
Poodles are excellent for first-time owners due to their low-maintenance nature. They are smart and easily trainable, making them great for new pet owners. Poodles require minimal exercise and can live happily in either an apartment or a house. They are also very affectionate and loyal animals that can easily bond with their owners and can even serve as an emotional support to first-time owners. Poodles also do not require extensive grooming needs and their fur can be easily kept manageable. All these qualities make them one of the best breed candidates for first-time owners.
Training a Poodle can vary in difficulty depending on individual factors, such as the breed's level of intelligence, the trainer's experience and ability, and the age of the Poodle. Generally speaking, Poodles are known to be highly intelligent, making them easy to train. With dedication and patience, you should be able to train your Poodle in basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. You may also opt for professional training if you feel that it is necessary. The best approach is to use positive reinforcement, with rewards for good behavior and ignoring bad behavior.
