Questions & Answers
Poodles are highly intelligent, active, and loyal dogs that make excellent companions. They come in three sizes – Toy, Miniature, and Standard – and while the Toy is the smallest and the Standard the largest, they all have the same characteristic curly coat. Depending on the breed, they are relatively low-maintenance in terms of grooming. Poodles are generally active and enjoy hours of exercise, like walking and playing fetch, to keep them mentally and physically healthy.
Contrary to popular belief, Poodles are not a hypoallergenic breed of dog. While they do not shed or produce dander in the traditional sense, the fluffy, curly coat of a Poodle still needs to be groomed regularly to prevent matting and clumps of hair from appearing. Though Poodle hair is constantly growing, it does not tend to shed or stick to furniture and other items the way other breeds do.
Poodles should not be fed foods such as raw or undercooked meats, fish or eggs, as these may contain harmful parasites or bacteria. Similarly, table scraps can be unbalanced in their nutrition and the addition of fats, oils, and salts can be bad for their health. On top of this, cooked bones, even if they are soft, can splinter and cause choking or intestinal blockage. Dairy products can upset their digestive systems, and many nuts, plants, fruits, and vegetables can be toxic.
Before bringing home a Poodle, you should buy all the essentials you need for its care and wellbeing. These should include grooming items such as a brush, shampoo, and nail clippers; a collar and leash; a bed or crate for sleeping in; toys for playtime; food and water bowls; and premium, high-quality dog food. You should also consider puppy training classes to get your Poodle off to the best start, as well as a schedule of regular vet visits.
Predicting the exact size of your Poodle puppy is challenging, but there are a few factors that will help you get a good idea of the pup's potential size. The breed standard indicates that a full-grown, standard Poodle is 15 to 22 inches tall and weighs between 40 and 70 pounds. Typically, smaller Poodles come from smaller parents and larger Poodles have larger parents, so you can look to the mother and father's size to estimate their puppy's adult size.
Poodles are indeed active dogs! Generally, they need lots of daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Poodles are typically quite playful and need plenty of playtime with their owner or other dogs. A daily 30 minute jog or a long walk is ideal for most Poodle breeds. Poodles are also smart and respond well to training and obedience classes. As long as their exercise and play needs are met, Poodles will remain healthy and active. Of course, each Poodle is an individual and their activity levels may vary.
Poodles are an excellent choice as a family pet! They are intelligent, loyal companions with a disposition geared towards pleasing those they love. Poodles are generally highly responsive to training and can become a part of the family very quickly. These dogs enjoy spending time with their owners, whether it's playing in the backyard or going for a walk around the neighborhood. They are also very loving, sociable, and will greet visitors with enthusiasm making them an ideal companion for children.
Properly training a Poodle requires commitment, consistency, and patience. First, establish a consistent and balanced routine--study up on basic behaviors and commands for your pup and set expectations. In part, you’ll be teaching them proper behavior, but your Poodle will also be learning good behavior from you, so focus on your own behavior during training. Encourage good behavior with verbal rewards and treats but discourage misbehavior with a firm, but not harsh, voice. Be prepared with straightforward, concise commands, and use positive reinforcement when necessary and feasible.
