Questions & Answers
Poodles are considered a non-sporting breed in the AKC dog show world, and belong to the same category as Bichon Frise, Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, and Toy Poodle. They are known for their thick, curly coats that come in a variety of textures and colors. The coat of the Poodle is considered hypoallergenic, meaning they are less prone to shedding and therefore can make a great pet for those with allergies. Poodles are an intelligent breed and respond well to training, making them a great family pet.
The Poodle's coat is unique in that it is composed of soft and curly fur and requires regular grooming in order to remain healthy. Depending on the clip, the coat can range from a smooth and short to a long and fluffy. The most distinctive feature of their fur is its texture while the coat is made of wiry hair, it feels unbelievably soft and springy to the touch. Although the coat of a Poodle does require regular brushing and combing, it is relatively low-maintenance compared to other breeds.
As a general rule, Poodles should not be fed human foods. Foods like popcorn, chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins can be especially dangerous to a Poodle. Even everyday foods like milk and cheese can cause digestive issues in your pet, and fatty foods could upset your Poodle's stomach and lead to health problems. Too many treats can also lead to weight gain, and some Poodles may be allergic to certain ingredients.
If you're looking to bring a Poodle into your home, there are several essentials you should make sure to have on hand. An important item for your doggy needs is a good doggy bed. Make sure you get one that is large enough to fit the size and weight of your Poodle and that is also comfortable and easy to keep clean. A collar, leash and tags – both the regular ones and proof of vaccination – are also important. A water bowl is a key tool to make sure your Poodle stays hydrated and healthy.
Poodles can be considered both small and large dogs, depending on their size. Standard Poodles, the largest of the breed, can stand up to 15 inches tall and weigh up to 45 pounds, while Toy Poodles, the smallest of the breed, can stand up to 10 inches tall and weigh up to 6 pounds. These two-size classifications can sometimes make it difficult to determine whether Poodles are considered large or small.
The amount of time you should walk your Poodle per day depends on your pet's individual needs. A good rule of thumb is to allow your pup to walk at least 30 minutes a day. However, if your Poodle loves to explore and loves to exercise, you may want to extend the amount of time to a minimum of 45 minutes per day. If you plan on taking your pup for a walk in the morning and in the evening, it can be a terrific way to give your pup the physical activity he or she craves.
Poodles are a popular breed and can make wonderful companions for first-time owners. Due to their intelligence and sociable nature, they tend to be low maintenance and easy to train, both of which make them a great pet for new owners. Poodles are also relatively small, making them a good choice for those who may not have the space for a larger breed. Additionally, they are usually hypoallergenic, so they may be a good option for those with allergies.
Absolutely! Poodles are widely considered one of the smartest and most trainable breeds of dog. They are famously clever, quick to learn commands, and eager to please. Poodles have exceptional memories, and are able to accurately remember and repeat behaviors that have been reinforced by positive reinforcement. They thrive in challenging environments and can often solve complex puzzles as well as thrive in activities that are designed for humans, such as agility and flyball.
