Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a breed of dog that is one of the most recognizable thanks to its unique look. The breed originated in Germany although it is now popular throughout the world. The breed is known for its intelligence, trainability, and willingness to please. Poodles come in standard, miniature, and toy varieties. It is considered a hypoallergenic breed due to its low shedding coat which can be clipped in different ways ranging from the traditional "teddy bear" clip or more modern afghan-style clip.
Managing allergies with Poodles can be challenging, but there are some tips to consider. One is to not get a puppy, as puppies have more dander that can trigger respiratory issues. Instead, look for a ‘hypoallergenic’ Poodle that has been groomed and clipped correctly. This type of Poodle has less fur that can irritate allergies. It’s also important to clean your Poodle’s fur regularly and use a quality shampoo for removing allergens.
Poodles should not be fed any foods that have been identified as toxic or dangerous for dogs. Table scraps, bones, sea creatures, grapes and some fruits, onions, garlic, avocados, chocolate, and anything high in sugar, as well as dairy products, should be avoided. Human medications, including over-the-counter and prescription drugs, should never be given to Poodles without the direction of a veterinarian. It's important to also consider the nutritional content of the food.
Owning a Poodle is a big responsibility, so it's important to make sure you're adequately prepared. Pet supplies you'll need include a collar and leash, a comfortable bed, a sturdy food and water bowl, plenty of toys and treats, and of course, dog food. You'll also need grooming supplies, such as shampoo, conditioner, nail clippers, a brush, and perhaps a professional dog groomer.
Poodles come in various sizes, ranging from the tiny Toy Poodle at up to 10 inches tall and 4 to 6 pounds to the Standard Poodle at 15 inches tall and up to 70 pounds or more. The other sizes include the Miniature Poodle at 10 to 15 inches tall and 10 to 20 pounds, the Medium Poodle at 15 to 20 inches tall and 20 to 40 pounds, and the Moyen or Klein Poodle at about 15 to 20 inches tall and 20 to 35 pounds.
The amount of exercise a Poodle needs every day depends on its age, breed, and size. Generally speaking, a Poodle should get thirty minutes of moderate exercise daily, as well as short walks throughout the day. If there is no time for a thirty-minute walk, a Poodle can break it up into two or three different fifteen-minute sessions to get the same benefits. However, Poodles are still active and require more exercise than the minimum allotted time. Owners should aim for at least one hour of walking per day to ensure their Poodle's health and happiness.
Poodles can make great family companions, especially when it comes to kids. Many poodle owners report that their pets are gentle and patient with children of all ages. They tend to be loyal and affectionate, and they love playing with kids. Because of their size, intelligence, and people-oriented personality, they make good watchdogs and alert their owners if someone is coming. Additionally, they respond well to obedience training, making them a great choice for children and inexperienced dog owners. Poodles often bond with their human family and are quick to learn new tricks and commands.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Poodle each day will depend on their age, experience, and skill level. While puppies require shorter but more frequent training sessions, older, experienced Poodles may need less frequent but longer periods of instruction. Generally, you should aim for at least 15-20 minutes of training time per day. However, if your Poodle is getting the hang of commands quickly, you could stretch it up to 30 minutes or longer. And in between these sessions, you'll want to continue the teaching throughout the day with periodic refreshers.
