Questions & Answers
Poodles are a very popular breed of dog that come in several sizes. They are most often seen as Standard Poodles, Miniature Poodles, and Toy Poodles which, respectively, are the largest, medium-sized, and smallest. Poodles are intelligent, loyal, and active. They also do not shed much making them great for individuals with allergies. Grooming should be done on a regular basis to keep their coat clean and tangle-free.
The Poodle coat is quite unique and very distinctive. It is known for how silky and luxurious it feels. It is composed of a soft undercoat and the outer coat is curly and dense. This thick and highly tight curls consist of medium-length hairs interlocked with shorter, more wiry hairs. These tight curls help protect the Poodle from extreme temperatures, as well as the elements. The thick, dense coat also helps the breed retain body heat, making them truly a dynamite choice for colder climates. The coat is also low-shedding and low-dander.
Poodles generally require high quality, nutrient-dense dog food tailored to their specific breed size and activity level. They may also enjoy some home-cooked meals as an occasional treat. As eager eaters, it's important to measure and monitor how much your poodle is consuming. Depending on your particular breed, size, and age, a poodle may need anywhere between one and two cups of dry food per day, broken down into two to three meals. A raw diet may also be beneficial for poodles, particularly if they have food-related allergies or sensitivities.
Before you bring your new Poodle home, it's important to make sure your house is ready and prepared. Start by making sure that potentially hazardous items such as electric cords, chemicals, plastic bags and small or sharp objects are kept out of reach of your pup. Create a specific area with comfortable bedding, toys and space to move around. Setting up a designated area can help create a sense of security for your pup and keep them safe from entering off-limit areas.
Size and weight of Poodle puppies can vary greatly, but typically your pup will grow to be a medium-sized dog. The American Kennel Club (AKC) provides height estimates for the different breed standards as: toy 10 inches or less, miniature over 10 inches to 15 inches, and standard over 15 inches but not to exceed 22 inches. Your pup's adult weight is likely to range from around 4 pounds for the smallest to over 70 for the largest Poodle specimens.
As with any breed of canine, the amount of time you should dedicate to your Poodle's daily exercise will depend on their age, health, and any physical/behavioral issues they may have. Generally speaking, however, Poodles are highly intelligent and active dogs that should ideally be walked for an average of 30-45 minutes each day. As with any pet, it's best to consult your veterinarian to determine a tailored exercise plan to ensure that your pup is feeling their best and getting the physical and mental stimulation they need each day.
Generally, Poodles are known to get along well with other pets, particularly if they're introduced to each other at a young age. Poodles are known for their intelligence and trainability -two qualities that help spur a strong social foundation when living with other pets. While they may need some gentle reminders to stay away from particular behaviors such as barking or demanding too much attention, with proper training and patience, Poodles and other pets will likely develop mutual respect and develop a secure and loving bond.
Poodles are intelligent and eager-to-please dogs, which makes them inherently somewhat easy to train; however, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how easy it is to train a Poodle. Training any dog will require dedication, consistency, and plenty of patience. In comparison to other breeds, that also means that Poodles may take longer to train, as they may need extra motivation and repetition to get the job done.
