Questions & Answers
A Poodle is an intelligent and cheerful breed of dog known for their distinctive curls and air of elegance. Standing tall and proud, Poodles have thick, textured fur coats and a strong, graceful build. They come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy, each of which have their own weight classifications and height requirements. All Poodle breeds have an eagerness to learn, making them a favorite breed for many types of canine competitions. Poodles are also known for being very trainable and loyal companions, making them wonderful additions to any family.
Poodles are often considered hypoallergenic dog breeds due to their low-shedding coat. This makes them a great choice for those with allergies, as their curly coat does not produce the same amount of dander as some other breeds' fur. However, Poodles do require frequent grooming to maintain this low-shedding quality. Regular brushing/combing helps reduce loose hairs and prevents that "pet fur" feeling in your home. No dog is completely non-shedding, so it is important to keep in mind the level of maintenance this breed may require.
Poodles require a high-quality diet of fresh, nutritional ingredients. Foods that are specifically designed to meet their unique needs are the best choice for this breed. Foods with “human-grade” ingredients, and those that list real meat as the first two or three ingredients can provide the best nutrition for your pet. Additionally, look for foods that do not contain by-products, artificial coloring, flavors, preservatives, sugars, or fillers.
Poodles can require some special care to ensure they are living their best life. Grooming your Poodle every 6-8 weeks is important, as Poodles have a continuous growth of hair and must be clipped or trimmed to prevent their coat from matting. Poodles should also enjoy a vitamin and mineral rich diet full of lean meats, veggies, and other healthy ingredients. They should enjoy daily activities such as walking, jogging, or swimming to keep their body in top shape.
Poodles come in a variety of sizes determined by their weight. The three standard sizes of Poodle recognized by the American Kennel Club are the Toy, Miniature, and Standard sizes. The Toy Poodle, weighing 4-6 lbs., is recognized by the AKC as 10 inches or under at the shoulder. The Miniature Poodle, usually weighing between 10-15 lbs., is recognized by the AKC as 11-15 inches at the shoulder. Finally, the Standard Poodle, typically weighing 45-70 pounds, is recognized as over 15 inches at the shoulder.
Absolutely! Taking your Poodle running is a great way to bond with your pup and gives your pup an opportunity to get and stay in good physical shape. It's important to remember that poodles have shorter legs than larger dogs so it's best to stick to an easy pace and adjust it to your pup's individual ability level. Make sure to take plenty of water (for both you and your pup) and pay attention to hot temperatures as poodles don't typically do well in the heat.
Poodles make great family dogs as they're intelligent, eager to please, and relatively easy to train. They have a gentle temperament and enjoy spending time with their owners. Plus, they don't require a lot of exercise—just the regular walks and playtime any other dog needs. Poodles are usually tolerant of children, making them a great addition to families. A bonus is their hypoallergenic fur, which will minimize any allergy issues that people may have in the home.
The exact amount of minutes per day needed to effectively train a Poodle can depend on each individual dog's temperament and learning ability. Generally, it is recommended to focus on basic training a minimum of 10 minutes per day and to gradually increase the amount of time each training session lasts. However, for advanced obedience and performance activities, such as agility, more time is likely needed. Flexibility is key. Try breaking up combined activities and exercises into different shorter sessions during the day to focus on different elements of a complex task or behavior.
