Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent, dignified, and socially engaging breed that are classified as a non-sporting breed of dog. Generally, Poodles are known for their unique coats, dignified bearing, and intelligence, and are considered one of the most elegant of all dog breeds. Poodles come in three distinct sizes, Standard, Miniature, and Toy, with each size attaining its height and weight at different rates. A Standard Poodle is usually over 15 inches in height and weighs over 45 pounds.
Whether or not you will have an allergic reaction to a Poodle depends on your individual sensitivities. Allergies are typically triggered by animal dander, saliva, and urine, and Poodles, like other canine breeds, possess all three. Typically, smaller breeds, like Poodles, tend to cause less allergic reactions since their coats are less likely to release dander and they produce less saliva. If you are considering getting a Poodle, it's important to get tested for pet allergies first.
Poodles require a diet consisting of high-quality food. For optimal health, avoid foods that contain artificial preservatives, additive coloring, artificial flavoring, or wheat. Foods that are rich in protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates, and supplements are suitable for Poodles. Some foods to consider feeding your Poodle include turkey, chicken, lamb, salmon, couscous, oats, quinoa, sweet potato, and acorn squash. You should also make sure to feed them a variety of vegetables and fruits, such as apples, carrots, broccoli, and green beans.
Before getting a Poodle, it's essential to get some key items including an appropriately-sized dog crate, food and water dishes, a collar and leash, a brush, toy, and treat rewards. Additionally, you'll want to make sure you have puppy pads and supplies to properly clean up and dispose of pet waste. You'll also need proper chewing toys, since all puppies are teething — plus puppy-specific food.
Poodles come in various sizes, with the most common being the Standard Poodle, which typically grows to a height of 15 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 45 and 70 pounds. Miniature Poodles are generally 11 inches or less in height, while Toy Poodles typically stand between 8 and 10 inches tall and weigh between 4 and 6 pounds. Giant Poodles, while rare, can grow to a height of more than a foot at the shoulder and weigh between 70 and 90 pounds.
Poodles generally require moderate daily exercise. On average, they need at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming, and playing fetch. This moderate amount of exercise maintains the Poodle’s physical health and also keeps them from becoming bored and-or destructive. If your Poodle has an energy level significantly higher than average, an extra daily walk or more vigorous exercise can help them burn off their extra energy.
Poodles often do well with children, as they tend to be friendly, intelligent, and playful dogs. With proper socialization, they can form strong emotional bonds with people of all ages. However, like all dogs, young children should never be left alone with a Poodle. It's important to ensure that kids know how to interact with Poodles correctly; otherwise, they may cause harm to the dog. With proper guidance and training, Poodles and children can usually become fast friends.
Training a Poodle is an enjoyable challenge. With their intelligence and high capacity to learn, they can quickly pick up new commands and behaviors. However, because of their active personalities and strong-willed attitude, you will need to be consistent and patient. The key to successful training is providing lots of positive reinforcement, treats, and rewards along with the structure and coaching of an experienced trainer. Regular training sessions, even as short as 15 minutes, can make a significant impact on your pup's obedience and response.
