Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent breed of dog that have been around since the 1500s, originating in Germany. They come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Poodles are a great choice for many people as they have a wonderful, loyal temperament and they require minimal grooming. They are excellent companions, and are great with children and other pets; however, they may become territorial and may react to strangers if not socialized properly or regularly. Due to their abundance of hair, they are considered somewhat of a hypoallergenic breed.
Managing allergies with Poodles can be done by minimizing exposure and ensuring that proper care is taken when grooming the animal. To minimize exposure, make sure that the pet is kept outside as much as possible and that the area where the pet spends time is kept clean and free of pet hair. Bathing the pet on a regular basis with hypoallergenic pet shampoo and rinsing out the coat completely will also help reduce dander and other allergens. When grooming the pet, make sure to use specialized tools that won't spread allergens and trim the coat instead of clipping it.
Poodles should not be fed human food or table scraps as these foods are not intended for a dog's diet. Certain foods should be avoided, including onions, garlic, and chives, as these can cause gastrointestinal distress. Chocolate, macadamia nuts, and avocados should also be avoided due to their potential toxicity. Additionally, any bones, fat, meat trimmings, or raw foods should also not be given, due to the potential for bacterial contamination and digestive upset.
To prepare your home for a new Poodle, there are a few important things to consider. As with all new dogs, it's important to puppy-proof your home by removing or making inaccessible any objects that can be swallowed or otherwise pose a hazard. It's also important to provide your pup with a safe, designated area that is exclusively theirs, with all the items they will need such as a bed, toys, food, and water bowls. Make sure this area is comfortable and free of loud noises, drafts, and other distractions that can scare or disrupt your pup.
Poodles are popularly believed to be smallor toy-sized dogs, however, depending on the type of Poodle, they can actually range in size from Toy up to Standard. While the Toy and Miniature variations typically grow to around 10-15 inches tall, the Standard Poodle can grow up to around 24-27 inches tall, and can weigh between 40-70 pounds. This means that, within the Poodle breed, some Poodle individuals are larger than other breeds of dog that are traditionally considered larger--making it a medium-to-large breed of canine.
Absolutely! Healthy, adult Poodles with a moderate energy level have all the necessary ingredients to make an excellent running companion. However, consider the specific breed, age, and condition of your pet when engaging in any vigorous physical activities. Seek the advice of your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns. Even though Poodles are talented runners, start slow and gradually build your jogging or running time and distance together. Pay attention to any signs of exhaustion or distress that your pet may be demonstrating.
Poodles are known to be intelligent, sociable, and affectionate dogs that bond well with kids of all ages. Specifically, they tend to bond with child owners and can be eager to please. Poodles generally have high energy, so they need frequent walks and plenty of supervision when playing with kids and other pets. It's also important to consider the size of the poodle. The smaller Standard, Miniature, and Toy breeds of poodles are great with small children as they are easier to manage and can get an adequate amount of exercise, even inside.
Training your Poodle is an important part of having a healthy and happy relationship with your pet. To begin training your Poodle, start with basics like sit, come, and stay. When teaching commands, use positive reinforcement like treats or verbal praise. Schedule regular short training sessions throughout the day so that your Poodle can learn gradually in short bursts. When your Poodle responds correctly and in a timely manner, never forget to reward your fuzzy pal right away. Additionally, Poodle breeds are highly intelligent so various interactive and stimulating activities are a must such as agility training or fetching games.
