Questions & Answers
Poodles are classified as a member of the non-sporting group of dogs. While they're known to be high-maintenance in terms of grooming needs, Poodles come in a variety of sizes, including miniature, toy, standard, and even larger. Despite appearances, they are actually very smart and active, making them a great choice for an active family. Poodles are quite skilled and easily learn tasks, making them the perfect choice for performances such as agility, obedience, tricks, and shows.
The Poodle is known for its trademark curly coat which may come in many different colors and shades. Depending on the cut, their coat can be short and wavy, or long and billowy. It may also be silky and straight, and can take center stage since the breed hardly sheds! This hypoallergenic breed is low maintenance and easy to care for since their coat does not have an undercoat. They require regular brushing and trimming to prevent mats and tangles.
Poodles, like any other breed, need a balanced diet to stay healthy and happy. The best diet for them is one that is made up of primarily fresh, healthy, whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, some boiled and shredded chicken, fish, eggs, and dairy. Low-fat canned food is also an option, as is cooked rice, potatoes, and oatmeal.
Before bringing your new Poodle home, there are a few preparations that should be made. Firstly, puppy-proof your home by removing or protecting any potentially hazardous items, such as cables and small objects. Secondly, decide where your Poodle will sleep a crate may be beneficial in helping the pup to become comfortable in its new environment. Thirdly, consider enrolling in an obedience class to ensure your pup is socialised and trained, while building a strong relationship between you.
The size of your Poodle puppy will depend on the type of Poodle you have. Standard Poodles will typically grow to be 15 to 25 inches tall, while a Miniature Poodle usually grows to 10 to 15 inches tall and a Toy Poodle will be less than 10 inches tall. A puppy's final height and weight are determined by the parents, so if you know their size, you can make some accurate predictions. However, even the same type of Poodle can range drastically in size.
Generally, it’s recommended that a Poodle should receive 45 minutes of exercise every single day. When determining how much exercise your pup needs, you should consider breed, age, and general health. A healthy adult Poodle typically needs at least two 15 to 20 minute walks each day, plus several short play and training sessions throughout the day. As a busy owner, you may not have the time to take your pup out for 45 minutes each day.
Poodles can make great family dogs due to their ability to form strong bonds with their owners. They enjoy spending time with their owners, and they have an even-tempered, gentle nature. Poodles tend to be very loyal and they can be easily trained to obey commands and learn tricks. Their intelligence and versatility make them great for activities such as competitive obedience and agility courses. They are also very playful which makes them a great source of entertainment for their owners.
Training a Poodle can be a rewarding experience but requires consistency and dedication. When beginning your training sessions, make sure your Poodle is hungry and motivated with special treats or toys. Regardless of the task, start with short training investments that can be built upon over time, and make sure your pup is rewarded frequently for successful behavior. Commands should be used consistently, and it's important to remain patient. If your pup is struggling with a task, take a break and come back to it later. Positive reinforcements like verbal praise, pets, and treats are great motivators.
