Questions & Answers
Poodles are a recognizable and beloved breed of dog, renowned for their intelligence and affection. They appear in a variety of sizes, ranging from the small Toy Poodle to the larger Standard Poodle. As part of the non-sporting group, they're quite versatile. In addition to being beloved house pets, Poodles can excel in field trials, sports, water retrieving, and agility. Although they need regular exercise, they don't require an inordinate amount of physical activity.
It is impossible to definitively answer whether or not Poodles will cause someone to experience allergies, as factors such as an individual's sensitivity to specific allergens can vary significantly. As with any pet, there is always a chance that contact with the dander, fur, or saliva of a Poodle could trigger allergic reactions, such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy, watery eyes, wheezing, coughing, and skin rashes.
Poodles enjoy eating a variety of nutritious foods, which should include both commercial and homemade diets. It is important to provide your Poodle with high quality kibble that includes proteins such as chicken, beef, fish, and eggs, plus beneficial carbohydrates and fats. Vegetables such as sweet potatoes, squash, broccoli, and carrots are also beneficial, as are fruits like apples, pears, and blueberries. Incorporating cooked grains like rice, oatmeal, and couscous into your pup's meals is also important.
Before getting a Poodle, it is important to make sure you have the necessary supplies. You'll want to get a harness-style collar, a four-foot leash, food and water dishes, mobile grooming gear (clippers, brush, nail tool, etc.), an ID tag, any necessary medications, a crate for potty training, disposable bags for litter, and a variety of toys for interactive play. The poodle should also have a bed or some sort of place where it can relax and rest.
Poodles are commonly classified as a medium-sized breed, but depending on the size of the particular animal, they may be considered a relatively larger breed than others. Generally, standard poodles stand up to two feet tall and weigh up to 70 pounds, while miniature poodles, the smallest size, are usually between 15-17 inches tall and 10-20 pounds. Some of the more petite poodles may even be considered small dogs, while the larger ones could be considered relatively larger.
Poodles absolutely love to swim! They are often referred to as "water retrievers" because of their natural affinity for water and eagerness to take a dip. Poodles have a unique coat that works to their advantage when swimming. Their dense, curly fur helps to keep them warm and their webbed feet aid in speed and agility, making swimming a natural and enjoyable activity. In many cases, poodles will attempt to find a body of water, such as a lake, pool, or even a bucket of water, when given the opportunity.
Poodles are known to be an excellent choice of pet for families with children. These intelligent and affectionate dogs are loyal companions that thrive in a loving home environment. Poodles also possess an impressive level of training responsiveness, making them easy to teach basic tricks or commands. With proper daily care, exercise, and training, they can make a great addition to your family. Poodles are alert, so they can be especially vigilant when it comes to keeping an eye on children. They are very eager to please and learn new behaviors, understanding instructions rather quickly.
The amount of time you need to train Poodles per day depends on the individual dog, its age, and the goals you have for the training. Generally, 15-20 minutes of focused, reinforced training per day can yield significant progress. That said, it is important to realize that no one session is likely to make a huge difference, rather it is the consistent, daily feedback and reinforcement that create the most lasting changes.
