Questions & Answers
Poodles are a beloved, highly-recognizable breed, and they are classified as a toy dog. Poodles can come in three sizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy and they are all considered to be part of the same breed. Poodles are known for their combination of intelligence, regal bearing, and fluffy fur, as well as for the distinctive ‘poodle cut’ – their trademark hairstyle. While many families think of them as friendly, gentle pets, poodles have a distinguished history as a performing companion as well.
Poodles are often thought to be non-shedding, but it's important to note that this isn't necessarily true. Poodles are considered to be low-shedding breeds, but they still do shed some. The amount of shedding they do can depend on the individual dog and many factors, such as their diet, environment, and overall health. Generally, poodles shed very little compared to many other breeds. Regular brushing can help to reduce the amount of shedding, so the amount of loose hair you find around the house should be minimal.
Poodles do have special dietary needs due to their size, age, activity level, and any health issues they may have. Owners should consider a high-quality, balanced diet that is specifically formulated for toy or mini breeds, as the requirements for these dogs are slightly different. Foods intended for larger dogs are not suitable for Poodles as they contain too many calories which can lead to obesity and other health issues. Additionally, Poodles should not be given any people food as it is not a balanced dietary choice for them.
Before getting a Poodle, it's essential to make sure you have the necessary items to care for your pup. This includes food and water bowls, a quality food appropriate for the breed, a leash, collar, and harness, a brush and comb, nail clippers, a toothbrush and toothpaste, chew toys, potty pads, cleaning supplies and waste receptacle, and crates or other forms of secure containment. Investing in some training materials may also be beneficial.
The size of your Poodle puppy depends on the particular breed of Poodle and its gender. Standard Poodles are the largest Poodle breed and can grow anywhere between 15 and 24 inches in height for both male and female pups, and up to 70 pounds in weight. Miniature Poodles are usually around 10 to 15 inches in height and up to 15 pounds in weight, and Toy Poodles typically reach 8 to 10 inches tall and weigh 4 to 6 pounds. Please consult your breeder to get a better estimate of how big your puppy may get.
The amount of time you should spend walking your Poodle each day depends on several factors, such as the Poodle's age, size, and overall health. A good rule of thumb is to strive for at least 30 minutes of activity for younger Poodles and 15-20 minutes for those over seven years old. It's also important to vary the locations and activities in which you engage with your dog, such as going for a jog, playing fetch, and exploring new places.
Poodles are known to generally do well with children due to their naturally friendly and outgoing personality. They have a playful and positive energy and are often eager to socialize. When properly trained and introduced to children, Poodles can bond with them and develop a loving relationship. As Poodles can be prone to stress, it is important to give them plenty of time and space to themselves and introduce them gradually to small children to let the dog become accustomed to them.
Training a Poodle is not necessarily easy, but it is possible with a bit of commitment, consistency, and knowledge. Poodles are intelligent, easily trainable dogs, but due to their high energy levels, they require an owner who is devoted and willing to provide them with plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Properly training a Poodle starts with positive reinforcement and consistent teaching, and continues with consistent rules and boundaries; being consistent will help prevent any confusion. Additionally, socializing them early and providing them with lots of mental stimulation will help redirect any excess energy in a positive way.
