Questions & Answers
Poodles are an intelligent and lively breed of dog, which are classified as a non-sporting breed due to their unique look. Originally bred in Germany as a water retriever, Poodles come in standard, miniature, and toy sizes. They are most recognizable by their thick, curly hair and wiry coat, which can vary in color from black to apricot to silver. Poodles have an even-tempered, playful disposition, enjoy companionship, and are known to be highly trainable due to their intelligence.
Poodles have a unique and luxurious coat that is oftentimes compared to human hair. The excellent quality of their coat is due to being wavy and not curly. It is also thick and has long guard hairs also called ‘top-knot’ or ‘pony’. Poodles also have large amounts of hair, which is more prominent with larger varieties. The kind of coat a Poodle has will depend on the type of poodle, as standard poodles have a much longer coat than Toy or Miniature Poodles.
Poodles are sometimes known for their finicky palates, so it helps to pay close attention to the diet of your particular pup. In general, a diet of high quality dry kibble and moist food is best for poodles. This diet should be supplemented with supplemental sources of vitamins, proteins, grains, and minerals for optimal nutrition. In addition to these types of commercially prepared foods, you can also provide your poodle with healthy fresh vegetables, fruits, and proteins such as poultry, beef, fish, eggs, and yogurt.
Before getting a Poodle, it's important to make sure you have all the necessary items to take care of your pup. Make sure you have enough dog food with the right kind of nutrition needed for a Poodle. Also consider having a variety of treats on hand to reward your pup for good behavior! Additionally, you'll need a comfortable dog bed, different sizes of collars with appropriate-sized tags, a leash, a few crates, long-lasting toys, bowls for water and food, and grooming supplies like a brush and shampoo.
Poodles come in different sizes, so the exact maximum size can vary depending on the breed you have. Standard Poodles are the largest of the group and can reach up to 15 inches (38cm) in height and weigh around 45-70 pounds (20-32kg). Miniature Poodles are around 10 inches (25cm) in height and weigh an average of 10-15 pounds (4.5-6.8kg).
Every Poodle has different exercise requirements, and as such it is difficult to provide a single answer to this question. Generally speaking, it is recommended that you give your Poodle at least 30 minutes of walking each day. However, for larger breeds and those that require more exercise, you may need to dedicate more time to walking. To ensure your Poodle is getting the exercise it needs, it is a good idea to consult with your vet about the best plan for daily walks. For most adults and seniors, 30-60 minutes of walking per day is sufficient and will keep them healthy and active.
Absolutely! As a loyal and easy-to-train breed, Poodles make a great choice for first-time owners. They are highly intelligent and will bond closely with their owners, but are also independent enough to be left alone at times. Poodles have a lot of energy, so owners should expect to provide regular exercise. Grooming is also an important factor to consider, especially as these breeds have a tendency to shed minimally. Poodles can make great family pets since their loving nature makes them patient with children.
It really depends on the individual Poodle some may need as little as 10 minutes daily to stay active and content, while others may need more. For a general guideline, you could aim for 20 to 30 minutes per day, broken down over several shorter walks or activities, such as playtime, fetch, or training games. This should be enough to keep your pup mentally and physically fit, and give them a sense of belonging. If you have the time, or if you have an especially energetic Poodle, you could even reach up to an hour of playtime daily.
