Questions & Answers
Poodles are a wonderfully versatile and highly intelligent breed of dog, belonging to the non-sporting class. Their distinctive, low-shedding curly coats come in a variety of sizes, from the larger Standard Poodles all the way down to the Toy and Miniature Poodles. All varieties of Poodle are often sought after for their intelligence and attractiveness, making them a popular family pet. Beyond a family pet, they are used in different forms of dog sports such as obedience, agility, hunting, and even tracking.
Generally, poodles are non-shedding dogs. However, some poodles, such as standard poodles, have thick coats which will shed minimally. Miniature and toy poodles have much finer coats that may not shed at all. One way to help ensure that your poodle is a non-shedding breed is to get an adult poodle from a breeder that specializes in toy or miniature poodles. If possible, find a dog with a coat that has been professionally groomed and take a look at how much fur it has.
Poodles, being a dog breed that has generally been known to have a delicate digestive system, should be fed a nutritionally balanced diet suited to their breed and individual tendencies. Homemade meals or high-quality, low-grain and grain-free diets are some of the best choices. For example, chicken, turkey, sweet potatoes and carrots, cooked in a healthy oil, such as olive oil can be combined with cooked brown rice, lentils or split peas. Avoid certain ingredients such as onions and garlic, as well as feeding raw or unsupervised meat.
Preparing for a new Poodle is essential for helping it adjust to life in your home. Begin by ensuring that your home is safe for your pet. Remove anything that could be a possible choking hazard or toxic to the Poodle. If you are going to crate train your dog, make sure the crate is the correct size and equipped with comfortable blankets, toys, and a water bowl. Familiarize yourself with common signs of distress in the breed, so that you can respond accordingly.
Poodles are usually considered one of the smaller-sized dog breeds, so when compared to the bigger breeds like Great Danes, they wouldn't be considered 'big.' However, that being said, Poodles can still be quite substantial in size depending on the specific type; Standard Poodles and Giant Poodles are the two most common and can reach sizes over 15 inches tall from paw to shoulder and weigh over 50 pounds when fully grown.
The amount of walking a Poodle needs daily really depends on the individual pup. For most pups, a minimum of 30 minutes should be the daily benchmark for exercise, with an ideal range of 30 to 60 minutes. Factors that play into the amount of walking that should be incorporated into your pup's routine include age, breed, activity level, and health. For instance, young Poodles may need more active play and walks than an older one might. If your pup is very active and athletic, they may require more intense walks than an older, more laid-back Poodle.
Poodles are excellent family companions because of their sweet nature and loyal personalities. They generally get along with kids very well, provided the children are taught how to correctly interact with the animal. Poodles can be affectionate, playful and gentle, so they make excellent playmates for children. Socialization is key; when introduced to children of any age in a controlled and positive manner, Poodles will bond with them easily, offering friendly companionship for years to come.
Although training a Poodle can be challenging at times, it is definitely possible and rewards can be great. Poodles are highly intelligent, so positive reinforcement is key to successful training. By rewarding consistent good behavior with praise, play, or treats, Poodles can learn quickly and have a lot of fun in the process. As long as you are patient and consistent in your approach to training, you can look forward to developing a rewarding relationship with your Poodle. That said, everyone has different experiences when it comes to training a Poodle, so results may vary.
