Questions & Answers
Poodles are widely considered one of the smartest and most versatile breeds of dog. They can quickly learn tricks and activities to keep them occupied which makes them a great companion. When properly socialized, Poodles have an endearing, outgoing personality that makes them quite the social butterfly. Their hypoallergenic coat makes them an excellent choice for people with allergies. Additionally, their coat comes in many different colors, usually black or white being the most popular. Poodles require a lot of physical and mental exercises so make sure you take time to play and exercise with them regularly.
It is not likely that Poodles alone will cause you to have allergies. However, if you have a sensitivity to pet hair or dander, you may experience some mild allergic reactions if you are in close contact with Poodles. Allergic reactions can vary from person to person. Allergies can cause itching, sneezing, and watery eyes. To determine if you have allergies to Poodles, you should visit your doctor to be tested.
Poodles generally should not eat anything containing chocolate, cocoa, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, and yeast dough. They should also avoid eating anything with artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols such as xylitol. Dogs should never eat persimmon seeds because they can cause blockages in the intestine if chewed and swallowed. When it comes to store-bought treats, look for ones that list natural, wholesome ingredients from recognizable sources. As with any diet, consult with your veterinarian to ensure the best health for your canine companion.
Before getting a Poodle, you should stock up on items such as a good quality food designed specifically for them that will meet their nutritional needs, a soft-bristled brush for minimal shedding and easy grooming, a collar and leash, sturdy and fun toys, several chew-proof beds, a few different sizes of bowls for food and water, waste bags for walks, and shampoos specifically for dogs. Additionally, it's important to get your pup to the vet for regular check-ups throughout their lives and to be prepared to address any medical concerns that might come up.
Poodles come in four distinct sizes according to the American Kennel Club (AKC): toy, miniature, standard, and moyen. Each size has its own height specifications. Toy poodles, for example, are classified as standing 10 inches or less while standard poodles must have a height of more than 15 inches but not exceeding 19. Miniature poodles stand in between toy and standard poodles, at between 10 and 15 inches tall.
The amount of exercise your Poodle needs depends on its age, breed, and health condition. Generally speaking, it's recommended that you walk your Poodle for at least 30 minutes each day. For puppies and younger dogs, more exercise may be necessary. Breeds like Toy and Miniature Poodles will need less exercise than Standard Poodles. And, if your Poodle is in poor health, its veterinarian may advise against exercise or recommend a restricted amount of exercise.
Poodles are often an excellent choice of pet for families with children. Not only do they have an outgoing, friendly disposition, but they are also highly intelligent, which makes them easier to train and more eager to please than other breeds. Furthermore, poodles are very loyal and protective of their owners, which can help establish a sense of security for a child. They are also generally low-maintenance, with relatively easy grooming needs, plus they're hypoallergenic, so they won't aggravate your child's allergies.
Poodles are without a doubt some of the sharpest, most intelligent dogs out there. While some studies have shown that bred-for-intelligence dogs such as Border Collies and German Shepherds may have an edge on a dog IQ test, Poodles are not far behind. With the proper training and guidance, Poodles are capable of understanding difficult commands, problem solving, and exhibiting complex behavior. If you're looking for a smart pooch, you can't go wrong choosing a Poodle.
