Questions & Answers
Poodles are considered one of the oldest dog breeds known to man and have been a popular pet for centuries. They come in three sizes – Standard, Miniature, and Toy – and can make great family pets. They don't shed much, making them great for people with allergies, and their curly fur coats require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. Poodles also have distinct personalities, which means that they need an owner who can help them feel secure and confident in order to be the best they can be.
Poodles have a unique coat that comes in three different varieties. The Standard Poodle coat is dense and curly, and needs professional groomers to keep it looking its best. The Toy Poodle's coat is shorter than the Standard, but still dense and curly. Finally, the Miniature Poodle's coat is the shortest of the three, but still curly with a dense texture. These coats are made of the same type of fur, but each size of Poodle has different clipping patterns, so the stands of fur are styled in a distinct way for each size.
Poodles are highly intelligent and sensitive dogs that require a nutritionally complete and balanced diet. A good diet for a poodle should include real meat as the main ingredient, with a combination of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as beneficial fats. High-quality, grain-free kibble, wet food, and freeze-dried homemade recipes are all excellent options for feeding your poodle. When choosing foods, read the ingredients list carefully and avoid any containing by-products or artificial additives.
To prepare your home for a new Poodle, the most important thing to do is to make sure your pet has access to plenty of toys, healthy treats, and chew items. Provide an area where your dog can rest such as a crate or a comfortable dog bed. It's also important to make sure the home is puppy-proofed by hiding cables and cords, unplugging any electrical items, and blocking any potential hazards. Make sure all of your cleaning products are securely out of reach.
Poodles can vary in size depending on the breed. Generally, Standard Poodles can measure anywhere from 15 to 24 inches with smaller ones likely to weigh between 40 and 70 pounds, while larger ones are generally around 70 to 90 pounds. Toy Poodles, on the other hand, usually measure around 10 inches and weight 4 to 6 pounds. Miniature Poodles are the middle-ground between the two and can grow to be around 15 inches tall, weighing around 10 to 15 pounds.
Generally speaking, it is recommended that Poodles be taken on a brisk 30-minute walk every day. This will allow them to explore their surroundings safely, fulfill their daily exercise needs, and help to reduce boredom. However, as with any breed, it is important to tailor the walk to your pet's age, size, and health level. For instance, puppies typically require more frequent short walks, while older dogs may prefer longer and slower paced walks. All-in-all, your Poodle should spend at least 30 minutes each day being walked or engaged in some kind of active play.
Absolutely! Poodles are known for their friendly, playful personalities and make terrific companions for kids. With a Poodle in the home, not only will your child benefit from the emotional support, love and affection of a loyal pet, but they'll also appreciate the low-shedding coats and gentle nature of the breed. Poodles have a great temperament and are very patient, meaning they make excellent playmates and are great at helping kids learn to be gentle and affectionate around pets.
Poodles have an outstanding reputation for their intelligence. Not only do they rank as one of the Smartest Dog Breeds in Stanley Coren's book, "The Intelligence of Dogs," but many owners have experienced firsthand how quick-witted their Poodle is. They have a natural curiosity to explore and learn. They exhibit problem solving skills and athleticism which show that they understand how to negotiate an environment and decipher between right and wrong. Many owners have found that their dogs instinctively and rapidly learn commands, tricks and training techniques when given clear and consistent guidance.
