Questions & Answers
Poodles are considered a highly intelligent and active breed belonging to the non-sporting group. Originating in Germany, the breed comes in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Their characteristic curly hair can be solid, parti-colored, or a combination of both. Generally known as a great companion, Poodles make wonderful family dogs and are highly trainable when it comes to learning tricks and commands. Though they are an adaptable breed, they are best in households that are able to give them ample socialization, exercise, and mental stimulation.
Poodles have been known to be one of the more hypoallergenic breeds of dog, due to their tight, curly coats. The tight curls often act as a barrier against allergens and dander, making them an excellent choice for those who are allergic or experience allergenic reactions to dogs. In order to maintain a poodle's hypoallergenic qualities, it is essential to keep its coat well groomed and get regular haircuts.
Poodles do have some unique dietary requirements, depending on their age and activity level. Like other breeds, they will require regular meals of high quality food full of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. As puppies, they need up to three meals per day and adults require two meals per day. To maintain the health and energy of an active poodle, a high quality kibble with specific ingredients is best, such as fruits, whole grains, vegetables, and proteins. If a poodle is more of a lapdog, a diet with fewer calories is best.
Poodles do have some special requirements, particularly as they relate to grooming. Poodles require regular brushing, frequent baths to keep their coats shiny and mats-free, and regular bathing and trimming of their fur to keep them looking their best. Additionally, Poodles need regular walks and physical activity to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, since these dogs have active minds, daily mental stimulation in the form of games, puzzles, and training is recommended to keep them occupied and stimulated.
Poodles come in four different sizes: Toy, Miniature, Medium, and Standard. Toy Poodles are the smallest, weighing in between 4 and 6 pounds. Miniature Poodles are larger than Toys, usually weighing between 11 and 15 pounds. The Medium Poodle has a size range between 15 and 25 pounds and is a fairly new development, only recognized as an official breed size in 2014. Standard Poodles can come in any weight range of 45 and 70 pounds. Height-wise, Toy Poodles reach 8-11 inches.
Absolutely! Taking your Poodle running can be an enjoyable activity for both you and your pup. Before you begin, it's important to consider the necessary equipment, such as a properly fitted running harness for your dog and polite leash manners. Additionally, you'll want to be sure your pup has already been established as being healthy enough for jogging. Once certain your pet is healthy, start off slowly and allow them to become accustomed to running, gradually building their speed and endurance.
Poodles tend to get along very well with kids, provided that the dog has been properly socialized and trained in good behavior. This breed of dog is highly intelligent and loves attention, both of which make them a great choice for households with children. They thrive on human interaction and will often follow a child around the house looking for fun activities. They have a gentle temperament that makes them excellent companions and are friendly to other animals, making them a great choice for families with other pets.
Training Poodles is a commitment that requires dedication and consistency. Since each Poodle has different exercise needs and energy levels, the exact amount of minutes needed per day to train them can vary. Generally speaking, the minimum recommended amount of daily training time is 20 minutes. However, to ensure your Poodle is making the most of their training time, it is best to aim for a minimum of 50 minutes each day. It is important to properly break down the training session into shorter periods to avoid tiring out your Poodle too quickly.
