The Poodle is typically known for its distinctive fur coat that comes in a variety of colors and textures. The breeds of Standard and Miniature Poodle boast a unique double coat; the outer coat is curly, dense, and harsh to the touch, and the undercoat is soft and thick. Poodles may come in different solid colors, which include black, white, gray, apricot, brown, and sometimes red. Meanwhile, the Toy Poodle has a single coat that is more curly and corded than other Poodles.
Poodles have specific dietary requirements depending on their age and size. Generally, the best food for Poodles is a premium dry food that is high in protein and provides essential fatty acids and vitamins to enable healthy growth and strong bones. Wet foods are also a good option as they can help increase water consumption. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains can be added to the diet, but any home-prepared food should be tailored to the individual dog's needs to ensure nutrient balance and complete and correct nutrition.
Poodles certainly require special attention! Depending on the size and breed of the Poodle, their needs can range from regular grooming to specific dietary considerations. Toy and Miniature Poodles typically need more frequent grooming whereas Standard Poodles may need less. All Poodles benefit from daily walks and exercise. A healthy diet is important too – both to make sure they get the nutrition they need, but also to help keep them trim. Their lovely curly coat requires frequent brushing and trimming to keep it looking its best.
Poodles can vary in size depending on the type. The Standard Poodle is typically 15 to 22 inches tall and weighs 40 to 70 pounds; Miniature Poodles are under 15 inches tall and weigh up to 15 pounds; and Toy Poodles are usually 10 inches or less with a weight of 6 to 9 pounds. How much exercise your Poodle should get each day depends on the individual dog, its age, and health. Generally speaking, a healthy Poodle should get at least 30 minutes of rigorous exercise per day. If your Poodle is younger and more energetic and in good shape, a 45-60 minute walk daily is recommended. If your Poodle is an older dog or isn't in the best health, shorter 20-30 minute walks a few times a day will be adequate. Ultimately, your vet should be consulted for exact recommendations that are tailored to your specific Poodle since individual needs can vary.
