Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent and skillful breed of dog classified under the same AKC (American Kennel Club) group as the non-sporting group. With origins from around 400 BC, these dogs are considered the second oldest bred dog in Europe. Generally bred for companionship, these dogs were also taught to be strong swimmers and adept retrievers. Poodles are known for their iconic "pom-pom" appearance, which makes them popular show dogs. Poodles come in three distinct sizes: standard, miniature, and toy.
Poodles are known for their signature curly coat. The range in coat texture varies from tight and corded to loose and wavy. There are three standard coat varieties: the corded, the curly, and the flat. Each type requires special care including regular brushing and regular trimmings. The corded coat requires careful grooming and should never be brushed, but rather hand-stripped or corded. The curly coat is the most common and the most recommended for people who have only basic grooming experience.
Poodles do have some unique dietary needs and considerations, so it's important for owners to plan out their Poodle's diet carefully. Poodles have relatively sensitive digestive systems which can be prone to upset if they are fed a diet that doesn't exactly suit their needs. Generally speaking, Poodles do best with a diet that is high in protein and fat, and one that doesn't contain too many grains or fillers. They also need a diet that provides omega fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants as well as plenty of natural and fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Before getting a Poodle, it is important to make sure you have all the essentials needed for your new pup. First and foremost, make sure to get a collar, with a ID tag including your contact information, and appropriate leash. Additionally, you'll want to have a comfortable crate, high-quality dog food, feeding and Water bowls, and grooming supplies, such as nail clippers, slicker brush, and dog toothbrush. It is also important to arm yourself with toys, blankets, bedding, and pooper-scooper to handle clean-up duty.
Poodles come in four key sizes: Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle, Toy Poodle, and Teacup Poodle. The Standard Poodle, the largest of the four, typically ranges from 15 to 23 inches in height and weighs anywhere from 40 to 70 pounds. The Miniature Poodle is quite a bit smaller with adult heights ranging from 11 to 15 inches and weights of 15 to 20 pounds. The Toy Poodle and Teacup Poodle vary slightly in size with the Teacup being the smallest.
Poodles are highly active dogs that require regular exercise and mental stimulation. While it is true that Poodles are not known for their traditional hunting and sporting abilities, they still have an abundance of energy that must be utilized through regular physical exercise. Over the years, Poodles have become especially popular in canine sports such as agility, flyball, and rally, where they can channel their enthusiasm and energy. In addition to their impressive athleticism, Poodles can also be taught fun tricks and games, which provide mental stimulation.
Poodles are generally social and friendly dogs, which means they usually get along with other pets just as well as they get along with people. While some poodles may be overly excitable or possessive of their space, most are willing to get along with other animals. As with any dog, it is important for poodles to be properly socialized from a young age and to acknowledge the other house pet in an appropriate way. With proper introduction, a poodle can become a loving and playful companion for any other house pet, creating a harmonious and balanced environment.
Training your Poodle is not difficult, but it is important to remember that these dogs have strong personalities and need consistency. Start by making a plan for what specific skills you are trying to teach your dog and what rewards you will use to reinforce desirable behavior. Once you have a plan in place, begin with basics like commands such as "sit" and "stay" and reward your Poodle when he follows these instructions. As you progress, add more commands and gradually increase the difficulty as your Poodle progresses. Always be sure to reward positive behavior, and use consistent, gentle corrections if needed.
