Questions & Answers
Poodles are known for being one of the most intelligent and obedient breeds of dogs. But the most interesting thing about them is that depending on the size, they can make great swimmers and joggers with a lot of endurance. According to the American Kennel Club, standard poodles can run up to 25 miles a day and excel in hunting, draft, and water retrieving. Miniature and toy poodles, on the other hand, make excellent lap dogs and agility athletes.
Poodles are often considered hypoallergenic because their fur is curly and lacks an undercoat, which typically causes individuals with allergies to react. Though the breed sheds little, grooming is necessary because the hair grows continuously and can lead to matting. It is important to note that no breed is 100% hypoallergenic, and individuals may still experience some symptoms. Additionally, components of poodle grooming materials, such as shampoos, may irritate those with allergies.
Poodles are a popular breed that requires a special diet in order to stay happy and healthy. They need a diet of high-quality, nutrient-dense dog food that is specifically designed for Poodles, such as one that is tailored to their age, size, and activity level. Make sure the dog food contains the amino acid taurine, which is essential for their overall well-being. Also, ensure that the food is balanced with the right amount of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
To prepare your home for your new Poodle, gather the supplies you need. This should include a crate or cage, food dish, and bedding. Select food and treats according to the breed of Poodle you'll be getting. Before the Poodle arrives, make sure any potential hazards in the home are secured or removed, and verify that all areas they will be in are secure and escape-proof. Establish boundaries, such as designating off-limit areas, and decide up-front how you will handle chewing and barking.
Poodles come in three different sizes and can range in size from about 10 inches in height for the Toy Poodle to as large as 15 inches in height for the Standard Poodle. The Miniature Poodle falls in the middle at around 11 to 15 inches in height. All adult Poodles, regardless of size, usually weigh from 10-70 pounds. Toy Poodles generally weigh 4-6 pounds, Miniature Poodles average between 10-15 pounds and Standard Poodles typically weigh between 40-70 pounds.
Poodles are often considered excellent swimmers and many of them take to the water happily. This breed was bred to assist in fetching game from water, so swimming is in their genes. Unlike some breeds, Poodles tend to retain their enthusiasm for swimming their entire lives. Many of them have webbed feet, which aids them in propelling themselves quickly and gracefully through the water. Poodles prove to be a strong swimmer but owners are encouraged to take extra precautions to ensure the safety of their pup, especially with smaller Poodles.
Poodles can indeed get along and even bond with other pets when given the right environment and training. Generally, they can live peacefully with cats and other small animals, as well as larger dogs, given that they are properly socialized and accustomed to them from an early age. In particular, Poodles tend to be quite friendly and playful with their own species, often forming close relationships with them as such, the best way to ensure a harmonious household is to acquire two poodles at the same time, especially if they will be living together in the same space.
Training your Poodle takes patience and consistency. The first step is to begin teaching basic commands like “sit” and “stay”. Start with short and achievable goals and provide several rewards for successful completion. For example, you can says “sit” and reward with verbal praise immediately after your Poodle sits down. Additionally, you may provide treats but it is important to not overdo it as not to disrupt the balance of a healthy diet. Once the command is consistently followed, gradually increase the difficulty level and lessen the rewards frequency.
