Questions & Answers
Poodles are a part of the AKC group of non-sporting and toy breeds. They have a curly coat, long ears, and a snout with a somewhat square muzzle. The breed was developed in Germany and France, and is renowned for its intelligence. Standard Poodles are the largest of the three sizes, with heights ranging from 15 to more than 22 inches and a weight of about 40-75 pounds. The two other sizes are Miniature and Toy Poodles, which can range from 10 to 15 inches in height and 6-15 pounds in weight.
Whether or not Poodles will cause you to have allergies ultimately depends on your individual reaction to the breed. Though some people are allergic to certain breeds of dogs, there are other people who are not affected by dog allergies at all. Poodles are a specific breed that often have low-dander coats and minimal shedding, which makes them appealing for people with allergies, but it's not a guarantee. It's best to visit a Poodle breeder or local animal shelter to test whether you are reactive to Poodles specifically.
Poodles have delicate digestive systems which means certain human foods should not be a part of their diet. Though edible, sugary treats such as candy or chocolate can cause rapid weight gain in Poodles as well as problems with teeth and digestion. Additionally, foods with high levels of fat such as bacon, sausage, greasy hamburgers, should be avoided as they can cause pancreatitis in Poodles. Other staples to avoid include onions, garlic, grapes, citrus fruit, macadamia nuts, wild mushrooms, avocados, and anything containing xylitol.
With any pet, providing the proper care and attention to ensure their health and safety is paramount. To become the best puppy parent for your Poodle, some of the steps you should take include understanding their basic needs (proper nutrition, exercise, etc.); getting the right vaccinations; consulting a vet regularly; providing a safe and stimulating environment; and giving plenty of affection and training. After all, a well-cared for and healthy Poodle is a happy Poodle, which in turn will mean a happier and more fulfilling experience for both of you.
Poodles come in three sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard. The Toy Poodle is generally 10 inches or under when fully grown and usually weighs around six to nine pounds. The Miniature Poodle stands between 10-15 inches and weighs in at about 10-15 pounds. The Standard Poodle is usually the largest of the three sizes, standing between 15-22 inches and weighing between 45-70 pounds when they reach maturity. Whichever size of Poodle you go with, they are sure to bring love and companionship that is sure to last a lifetime.
Poodles need quite a fair amount of exercise to remain healthy and happy. Playtime, such as running, fetching, and agility activities are all highly recommended for Poodles. For adults, it is recommended that activities like these are carried out for at least an hour a day. Puppies, however, should not be over-exercised, with bouts of playtime that last between 10 and 35 minutes being beneficial to its development. As one of the most active breeds, Poodles also love long walks, which can also be considered valuable exercise.
Poodles can absolutely be good with kids when they are trained properly and socialized from a young age. It is important to remember that all dogs, regardless of breed, react differently to children. Poodles are friendly, intelligent, and easily trainable, and gentle around people. They are regal, loyal, and make great family pets, however this doesn't mean they will automatically be great with kids. As with all dogs, you should establish and enforce clear boundaries and rules with your poodle.
Training a Poodle can be relatively easy, depending on the individual dog and your own experience level. If you have prior experience training dogs, it can be a straightforward process. However, even if you don't have experience, it's still possible to train your Poodle as long as you take the time to learn the necessary skills and have some patience. Poodles are often eager to please their owners and can pick up commands quickly with repetitious training and positive reinforcement. You'll also need to devote time and energy to setting boundaries and providing consistent leadership so that your pup understands the household rules.
