Questions & Answers
Poodles are considered to be in the non-sporting working group, according to the American Kennel Club. A versatile and loyal breed, poodles are often described as "intelligent, trainable, and active." They come in three sizes, toy, miniature and standard. Poodles have a great ability to learn quickly and retain what they have learned, which have made them successful in a variety of performance activities. They are also well-known for their curly, hypoallergenic coats and their playful, energetic, and affectionate natures.
Poodles have a thick, curly coat made up of two layers. The undercoat is downy and soft, while the topcoat is composed of harsh, curly hairs. The hair tends to be robust and quite dense, providing poodles with a waterproof barrier to protect them from cold temperatures. Depending on the type of poodle, their coat could vary in colors including apricot, red, black, silver and white. Poodles require grooming, including brushing and combing, to keep their coats looking healthy and neat.
You should avoid feeding your Poodle table scraps, fatty meats, or foods high in saturated fats such as pork, certain fish, or organ meats. Alcohol should also be avoided because it can be very toxic for dogs. Dairy products, especially those high in fat, can cause digestive and skin problems, and are best avoided. Additionally, onions and garlic may be hazardous to your Poodle's health and should be avoided, as well as chocolates, caffeine, grapes, raisins and macadamia nuts, as they are all potential sources of toxicity.
To prepare your home for your new Poodle, be sure to have plenty of chew toys that will help redirect any destructive chewing behavior, as this breed can be notorious for that as puppies. Consider puppy-proofing your living space to reduce the chances of your Poodle accessing objects that can be dangerous or that could lead to destructive behavior. Ensuring your Poodle will have an area of your home to call their own will make them feel safe and secure.
Poodles are known as medium-sized dogs, though they can appear larger depending upon the breed standard. Standard poodles can weigh anywhere from 40 to 70 pounds and range from 15 to 22 inches at the shoulder, with the larger size reserved for males. Therefore, while Poodles may appear larger than other breeds of equal weight, they are not generally considered to be big dogs. Miniature and toy poodles are much smaller, ranging from 5 to 15 pounds and 10 to 15 inches at the shoulder.
Poodles are considered to be active, energetic dogs with a zest for life. Between their intelligence and tendency to be engaging, they make loving and devoted companions. They have sturdy, muscular legs and webbed feet, allowing them to give a good chase no matter the environment. Poodles also require continual mental stimulation, regular physical exercise, and plenty of social interaction to stay happy and healthy. As social animals, they especially enjoy being around their family, making them excellent family pets.
Poodles are generally good with children. They are a friendly breed and most of them have gentle and patient temperaments. While they have a natural tendency to bark and alert their owners to new activities in their surroundings, if properly trained they make great playmates. They can show a lot of love and loyalty to their owners, including children, and have strong social skills. Poodles are loyal and can be easily trained to recognize authority. With proper training and exercise, they can provide hours of amusement and companionship for children, as long as they are never neglected and always treated with respect.
Training Poodles requires patience and consistency, so it is important to establish a routine with your pup. Generally, a minimum of 15 minutes per day should be dedicated to training, but it is recommended that you spend at least 30 minutes daily working on obedience and behavior training. For optimal success, some trainers suggest dedicating about 60 minutes a day to practice with your Poodle. This amount of time may be too much for some owners, but it is an important investment in your Poodle's future obedience and well-being.
