Questions & Answers
Poodles are a popular dog breed known for their intelligence, loyalty, and fluffy coats. Fun facts about Poodles include their long history as a favored breed of French nobility. In fact, the word “poodle” comes from the German word “pudel,” which means “splash in water.” The Poodle breed is thought to originate from the old French Poodle, the Barbet, or the French Water Dog. All three breeds can be seen in modern Poodles.
Poodles are considered to be a non-shedding breed because their coat grows continuously unlike other breeds where dead hair gets pushed out. This is why Poodles do not shed their fur like other dogs, making them an ideal pet for owners who are prone to allergies or find pet hair to be an issue. Grooming is still necessary however, as the continuously growing hair must be kept trimmed to encourage healthy coat growth and avoid tangles. In addition to this, regular brushing is also needed to prevent matting and keep your Poodle looking their best.
Poodles are a high-energy breed that needs to be fed a nutritionally balanced diet. Feed them a food that is appropriate for their age (puppy, adult, or senior) and meets their nutritional needs. Look for a food that is AAFCO certified to ensure it meets all nutritional guidelines. Avoid foods with by-products, fillers, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, as these products can be harmful to your pet. Feed them 2-3 times per day, in amounts that your vet recommends. Provide plenty of fresh water.
When preparing to welcome a Poodle into your home, there are a few essentials you should purchase before they arrive. First, you should get some food and treats specifically created for poodles; check with a veterinarian to ensure you are feeding your pup the right kind of nutrition. Second, a collar, leash and harness set should be bought to help you walk your canine companion comfortably and safely. Additionally, you'll want to purchase a sturdy bed that is big enough to support your pup's size and weight.
The size of your Poodle puppy will depend on the type of breed you choose – Toy, Miniature, or Standard. Toy Poodles are the smallest, usually weighing 4-6 pounds and standing around 10 inches tall, while Miniature and Standard Poodles usually weigh 15-17 pounds and reach heights of 11-15 inches and 45-70 pounds and reach a height of 15-24 inches respectively. Generally, teacup Poodles are simply a Toy Poodle bred to be significantly smaller in size.
Generally speaking, a Poodle should walk at least 20 minutes a day to stay healthy and fit. However, this does not need to be done all at once. You could take five or 10 minute walks several times a day to add up to that amount. Additionally, depending on your Poodle's age and size, it may need more or less exercise. Poodles are very active, so walking them longer periods of time or multiple times during the day will be beneficial.
Poodles are indeed heralded as good family dogs due to their impressive intelligence, trainability and devoted natures. These qualities make these pups well-suited to fit into households with kids, elderly people or those with disabilities. Poodles excel in obedience and agility training, making them an excellent option for families who are interested in such activities. These social pooches also have a unique non-shedding coat, making them a great choice for people with allergies.
It really depends on the age, health, and temperament of your Poodle. For active, young Poodles, a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise each day is usually sufficient, with regular grooming and training sessions needed to maintain their health. For older Poodles, a minimum of 20 minutes of exercise a day, as well as consistent training to keep their minds active, is a good starting point. If your Poodle has any special needs or health concerns, you should adjust the amount of exercise accordingly.
