Questions & Answers
Poodles are a class of dog known for their intelligence and high level of trainability. They are considered a non-sporting dog, and come in a variety of sizes ranging from Standard Poodles (over 15 inches tall at the shoulder) to Toy Poodles (under 10 inches tall). They are also recognized by their curly coat, which comes in a variety of solid colors, as well as combinations of white with silver, blue, cafe-au-lait, grey, brown, apricot, or red.
Poodles have a unique coat that people often think of when picturing the breed. They are much more than just a pretty face! The fluffy exterior of the Poodle comes in both curly and corded forms that require daily brushing. Its coat has an affinity for water, which helps repel dirt, and aptly protects it against the cold. The most popular color of Poodle coat is the traditional black and white, although there are many other options of beautiful colors and patterns to choose from.
Poodles are intelligent and energetic dogs, so their diet needs to provide enough nutrition to keep them healthy. Adult poodles generally need dry kibble specifically designed for their breed size with quality proteins and other essential nutrients. A combination of wet or canned food, homemade meals, and fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy treats can also be offered to give your poodle a well-rounded diet. It should be noted that poodles are also prone to certain health issues, so diet should be tailored to your pet's individual needs.
Before getting a Poodle, it's important to purchase some essential items that will help ensure its safety, health, and comfort. This includes a lead and collar, food and water bowls, a bed, shampoo, brushes and combs, toys, puppy training pads, nail clippers, a muzzle, and chew toys. Additionally, some basic medical supplies such as antiseptic, bandages, flea and tick treatments, any medications prescribed by your veterinarian, and treats will help keep your Poodle happy and healthy. A pet carrier is also recommended to transport your Poodle safely.
Poodle puppies come in three different sizes, so size will vary greatly depending on the type of Poodle you have. Standard Poodle puppies can grow up to around 15 inches at the shoulder and weigh 50 to 70 pounds. Miniature Poodle puppies will usually grow to around 10 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 10 and 18 pounds. Lastly, Toy Poodles will typically reach a height of around 10 inches and a weight between 4 and 6 pounds.
The amount of time you should walk your Poodle each day depends on several factors, including their age, size, and energy levels. Generally speaking, it's recommended to provide your Poodle with 20-30 minutes of physical activity each day. This could take the form of a brisk walk, a run, or an opportunity to play in a safe, fenced-in area. Remember, you should also provide mental stimulation for your Poodle daily, such as variable grain-free dog food puzzle toys, along with interactive playtime and training.
Poodles have a reputation for being highly intelligent, playful, affectionate, and patient, which makes them an excellent breed for families with children. Poodles are not only loyal and friendly, but also protective, which could provide some extra peace of mind when it comes to kids being around this breed. They are highly trainable, so teaching them when to interact and when to stay away from the children is easy. In addition, they don't shed much, so children with allergies can often be around a Poodle without fear of triggering a reaction.
Poodles are an incredibly intelligent breed of dog, and have consistently ranked high in many intelligence tests conducted by veterinarians and canine behaviorists. Poodles can be trained to accomplish complex tasks, from obedience to advanced search-and-rescue exercises, and can easily learn commands and tricks. They are capable of problem-solving and have been known to figure out how to open doors, unscrew lids, and pull levers.
