Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a breed of dog known for its intelligence and fluffiness. They are widely regarded for the fluffy coat of tightly curled or corded hair, hence their nickname "the pompom". These dogs can come in a number of standard sizes, and although they are primarily a companion animal, they can also be trained to hunt, lead sleds, or be used in military or police work. They are affectionate and loyal companions, known for not barking excessively. They are highly trainable and do well in obedience competitions, agility, and flyball.
Poodles are often considered hypoallergenic, but this does not guarantee that people with allergies are completely allergy-free. Even non-shedding breeds can cause allergic reactions, so it is important to be aware that even a Poodle may cause eyelid redness, watery eyes, sneezing, wheezing, coughing, asthma, and skin irritation. However, it is important to note that people with allergies respond differently to different breeds and may even be allergic to a Poodle and not any other breed.
Poodles should not be fed any type of human food, as many human foods can cause stomach upset or even lead to more serious health issues such as Hepatic Lipidosis, pancreatitis, and obesity. Foods to avoid include anything with a high-fat content such as butter and gravy, eliminate foods that are high in carbohydrates like pasta and bread, and also avoid foods that are overly sugary such as candy, cakes, and cookies.
Before getting a Poodle, you should make sure you have all the essentials necessary for a happy and healthy pup. This includes quality food to meet your pup's nutritional needs, a comfortable bed or crate to sleep in, sturdy toys for stimulation and play, a leash and collar, cleaning supplies for grooming and messes, and a food and water bowl. You should also have a veterinarian lined up for regular checkups and vaccinations, as well as to discuss any health concerns.
Poodles vary in size depending on the breed; toy, miniature, and standard. Toy Poodles are usually 10 inches or under while Miniature Poodles are usually 11-14 inches. Standard Poodles measure around 15 inches or more. So, while some Poodles may be considered 'big', it would be more accurate to say they can range from small to large. The intelligence and temperament of Poodles remains consistent when looking at the different sizes, making them the ideal pal for many households.
Poodles generally need quite a bit of exercise. This dynamic breed is known for their intelligence, along with a strong desire to stay active and engaged in their environment. On average, a Poodle needs to get at least one hour or more of exercise each day, depending on the size of the individual. This could include anything from long walks, runs, and hikes, to a nice game of fetch or swimming in a pool or lake.
Poodles can make great pup parents for first-time owners. They are intelligent, trainable, and benefit from regular exercise. Socializing them with other animals and humans will encourage good behavior and a more out-going demeanor. They are quite easy to groom at home, and do not need to be bathed more than twice a month. They have a predisposition to some other health issues, so it’s best to have them examined and get them vaccinated regularly, and best to meet the breeder beforehand.
Training your Poodle is an enjoyable and rewarding experience. First, you should socialize your pup by introducing them to a variety of people and animals. You should also provide them with positive reinforcement by rewarding them with treats when they do something you want them to do. Additionally, be sure to use consistent commands when teaching them new behaviors. You should utilize basic obedience exercises such as sit, stay, and heel to establish yourself as the leader. Practice these exercises daily and your Poodle will pick up the behaviors quickly.
