Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a breed of dog that is one of the oldest and most recognizable in the world. They are famed for their luxurious coats and are highly active and intelligent. Poodles come in three sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard, and all have unique personalities that suit different kinds of owners. Toy Poodles are ideal for pet owners who live in urban areas, while Miniature and Standard Poodles often end up as beloved family pets.
Poodles have a low-shedding coat, making them a great option if you do not want to deal with hair around the house. While poodles are not considered to be a non-shedding breed, their shedding is minimal compared to many others. This is because poodle coats are made up of curls and waves that trap their dander, preventing it from becoming airborne and clinging to furniture and clothing. This also prevents them from having "doggy-smell" issues.
Poodles should not be given any foods containing grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chives, or any other ingredients that can be toxic to Poodles. It is also important to avoid feeding your pet table scraps, processed human foods, entire bones, thick chunks of raw meat, dairy products, greasy foods, salty snacks, and sugary snacks, as these could cause digestive upset or cause other issues. Also, avoid feeding Poodles chocolate, which is toxic to dogs, as well as raw dough, which may cause painful gas and potentially other digestive issues.
Before you bring your new Poodle home, it's important to take some steps to ensure both of your transitions are as smooth as possible. Begin by gathering all the supplies you need for your Poodle. You will need food, a water and food bowl, a bed, a collar and leash, and a few toys. After the supplies are purchased, make sure you research their breed to better understand common behaviors and how you can encourage positive behaviors in a gentle yet effective manner.
Poodles typically come in three sizes toy, miniature, and standard. The toy Poodle, the smallest of the three, typically gets to be around 10 inches tall whereas the miniature Poodle is usually 11-14 inches and the standard Poodle reaches 15 inches and taller. However, it is not uncommon for standard Poodles to reach heights of 18-24 inches at the shoulder. Generally, the Toy Poodle is six pounds and under, the miniature Poodle is between 10-15 pounds, and standard Poodles weigh in at 40-65 pounds.
The amount of exercise your Poodle needs depends on a variety of factors, such as age, size, and activity level. To stay healthy, adult Poodles should generally get at least 12-20 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity per day. However, that doesn't mean you should only take your Poodle for 12-20 minutes of walking each day — ideally, your Poodle should get more exercise than that. Incorporate running, Agility, off-leash games, and swimming into your Poodle's exercise routine, if possible.
Poodles can make wonderful family pets. They are highly intelligent, energetic, and eager to please. Poodles are great family dogs because they are loyal and affectionate companions that bond deeply with their owners. They are also incredibly easy to train due to their high intelligence, making them excellent choices for families with children of any age. Because of their moderate energy level, grooming requirements, and friendly attitude towards strangers, they are also great choices for those living in small apartments too.
Poodles are an intelligent breed that do best with consistency and a gentle but firm approach to training. To get your Poodle started on the right track, start by establishing yourself as the alpha of the family and the leader of the pack. Implement an easy-to-follow routine with house rules and always make sure your pup is given plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Once the basics are established, you can move onto teaching simple commands such as “sit”, “stay”, and “come” with treats and positive reinforcement.
