Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest and most widely recognized breeds in the world. They were bred initially to assist in duck hunting, and their signature clipped coat is meant to accentuate their athletic ability and speed in the water. They become very attached to their owners and can be excellent travel companions; in fact, the poodle is the official national dog of France. They are also great family dogs, as they tend to get along with everyone and can be trained to follow basic commands.
Poodles are often considered to be hypoallergenic because they tend to cause fewer allergic reactions than some other breeds. This is because their fur is usually curly instead of straight; the curls trap dander and dirt, preventing it from entering the air where it can cause allergic reactions. Additionally, Poodles have no undercoat, which further reduces the amount of fur that can be shed. Ultimately, however, the human body reacts differently to different breeds, and there is no guarantees that any breed is truly hypoallergenic.
Poodles are a smart and sensitive breed, so it's important to feed them a balanced diet that keeps them healthy and happy. Poodles should not be fed any type of food that is high in fat or sugary, as these nutrients can lead to weight gain, as well as other health conditions such as diabetes and pancreatitis. Some other foods to avoid include products containing chocolate, coffee, tea, alcoholic beverages, avocado, grapes, onions, macadamia nuts, and garlic.
To prepare your home for a new Poodle, first evaluate the environment for safety. Check for gaps in fencing, potential hazards like exposed wiring and cords, and make sure any poisons and cleaners are kept out of reach. Secondly, pet-proof your home. Ensure you have comfortable bedding, safe chew toys, food dishes, and collar and leash. Additionally, provide your pup with a cozy, calming space such as a crate or dog bed. Finally, make sure you have the necessary grooming supplies on hand such as brushes, clippers and nail trimmers.
Poodles are considered both big and small dogs, depending on the variety. Standard Poodles typically range from 15 to 22 inches in height and weigh between 45 and 70 pounds. Miniature Poodles stand 10 to 15 inches tall and weigh 10 to 16 pounds. Toy Poodles are the smallest, measuring 4 to 6 inches in height and weighing four to six pounds. Because of this wide variance in size, it's impossible to definitively label Poodles as "big" or "small" dogs.
Poodles need a decent amount of exercise to stay healthy and happy – typically 45 minutes to an hour of physical activity per day. This can include activities such as walks, runs, hikes, or swimming. It's important for Poodles to be well-socialized, so taking them out in the community with other people and dogs is a great way to get exercise and keep them comfortable around others. Also, mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise, so make sure to spend 15-20 minutes a day to play interactive games with your Poodle.
Overall, Poodles tend to get along very well with children. Because of their high intelligence, these loyal dogs are known to be patient and loving with children and are well-mannered when it comes to interacting with them. They can provide excellent companionship, which makes them a great option for a family pet. In addition, due to having low exercise requirements, Poodles make for an ideal pet if you are living in a smaller space.
Training your Poodle is a great way to establish a strong bond between you and your pup! Start by rewarding them for good behavior with treats, toys, and lots of praise to keep them engaged and motivated. Establish clear rules and boundaries and be consistent with your commands, and don't forget to practice any commands in varying environments so they can learn to consistently follow directions. Puppy classes may also be a great way to socialize your pup and learn proper commands and behaviors at the same time.
