When you turn dog breeding into an industry that only cares about profits, you get terrible dog mills. At mills, Corgis often live in cramped and unsanitary conditions. They go without basic needs and are bred purely for numbers. Puppies from these mills often come with genetic health problems (which can cost you a lot at the vet's office).
Corgis were bred to be agility dogs. They originate from Wales, in the United Kingdom, where they excel at leaping through hoops and running around the block. Today, Corgis are less used for their athleticism than for their photogenic looks and starring role in memes. The Corgi is a high-speed dog that loves to run and play.
An American Corgi is a cross between a Welsh Corgi and a Cardigan Corgi. American Corgi breeders are typically striving to produce puppies with the Cardigan Corgi’s physical build, but without the Welsh Corgi’s independent spirit. As American Corgis are a new designer breed, we advise only using reputable breeders to select your puppy.
Corgis are known for their intelligence and Trainability. They are known to be the happiest when they have a task to do and can be entertained with puzzles and games throughout the day. A good attitude is key in training them, as corgis can be stubborn at times.
Breeders and businesses in the Uptown Puppies Network have a rigorous vet check process in place to guarantee that all their puppies are healthy before they can be adopted. All puppies must go through a comprehensive check which includes checking their noses to tails for any potential health concerns. Breeders take their dogs’ health very seriously, so it is important for potential adopters to do the same by taking them to the vet as soon as they arrive at your home.
There’s little reason NOT to get a Corgi if you’re looking for a great companion. Corgis are fantastic companions to both solo dog lovers and families of all sizes. In fact, many people find that they don’t need as much exercise as they once thought because corgis are so energetic. If you can provide your corgi with moderate, daily exercise, then there’s no reason not to get one.
Traditionally, Corgis were bred as working dogs. Because their tails could easily get entangled in livestock, breeders began docking their tails to keep them safe when on the job. Although today most Corgis are companions, traditional breed standards for Pembroke Welsh Corgis maintain the docked tail. Although many people find the docked tail aesthetically displeasing, it is a necessary safety measure for these powerful working dogs.
Because Corgis are so short, you may think they’d find climbing stairs difficult. There is some truth to this—in fact, it’s recommended that you keep your puppy away from stairs until they reach at least 8 months old, with some experts recommending a minimum of one year old. Puppies are still developing and could be injured by stair climbing.
Corgi puppies are born with a natural herding instinct. If not taught proper obedience, a Corgi puppy may want to herd people or other pets. Proper obedience training can help discourage this behavior, but many breeders recommend that families with young children avoid bringing home a Corgi puppy.
There are dozens of different Corgi crosses, each with their own unique characteristics. Some popular ones include the Coroodle (Poodle + Corgi) and Corgle (Beagle + Corgi), but there are many more! Crossing breeds with a Corgi will usually produce puppies with the characteristic short legs we all know and love.
