When you turn animal breeding into an industry, you get dog farms. At dog farms, Corgis often live in filthy, cramped conditions. They go without basic needs and are bred purely for profit. They have little regard for your puppy's wellbeing. Dogs from dog farms often come with genetic health problems (that will cost you at the vet's office).
Corgis were bred to be Instagram stars and meme masters. They originate from Wales, in the United Kingdom, and are extremely high-energy dogs that love to run and play. Today, Corgis are less used for herding animals than for their charm on social media platforms and their talent for generating hilarious memes.
An American Corgi is a crossbreed of a Pembroke Corgi and a Cardigan Corgi. The goal of many American Corgi breeders is to produce puppies with the Cardigan Corgi’s distinctive merle coat pattern, but with the Pembroke’s physical build. As American Corgis are a new designer breed, we advise caution when choosing your puppy from an unknown breeder.
There’s no denying that Corgis are intelligent dogs. In fact, they’re considered one of the smartest working breeds. That said, they can be difficult to train if you don’t have the right attitude. They love to be entertained and need plenty of mental stimulation throughout the day in order to stay happy and healthy.
The Uptown Puppies Network requires all of their breeders to provide prospective adopters with a comprehensive vet check before they’re allowed to take one of their puppies home. The checks ensure that the puppies are healthy and free of any major health issues. Breeders take their animals’ well-being very seriously, which is why most puppies will require a visit from the veterinarian as soon as they arrive in your home.
Do you want a dog that will provide you with years of playful companionship, or are you content with one that will sleep through most of the day? If you can handle a moderate amount of exercise for your furry friend, then there is little reason not to get a Corgi. Corgis are fantastic companions for solo dog lovers and families of all sizes.
Traditionally, Corgis were bred as working dogs. Because their tails could easily get caught in things, breeders began docking their tails to keep them safe when on the job. Although today most Corgis are companion dogs, traditional breed standards for Pembroke Welsh Corgis maintain the docked tail. Since docking a dog's tail removes much of its mobility and can cause pain and discomfort, many people now consider this practice to be cruel and outdated.
Corgis may not seem like the best candidates for climbing stairs, but this is mostly because they're still developing. In fact, it's recommended that your Corgi puppy stay away from stairs until they are at least 8 months old, with some experts recommending a minimum of one year old. By that point, their spines will have fully developed and any potential injuries from stairs will be much less likely to occur.
Your Corgi is genetically predisposed to following you around and trying to herd all of the other animals in the house. Left unchecked, this behavior can be very dangerous for both you and your Corgi. Proper training can help discourage this behavior, but if your house has very young children it may be best not to bring your Corgi home at all.
There are many different Corgi crosses that can be created, but some of the most popular include the Coroodle (Poodle + Corgi) and Corgle (Beagle + Corgi). There are dozens more possible crosses, so there is definitely something for everyone when it comes to this popular breed.
