When you turn breeding dogs into an industry, you get terrible dog mills. At these mills, Corgis often live in unsanitary and cramped conditions. They go without basic needs and are bred for the sole purpose of making money. Puppies from these mills often have genetic health problems that will cost you at the vet's office.
Corgis have a long and proud history as working dogs, mainly in cattle herding. Despite their popularity on social media platforms such as Instagram and Vine, the Corgi is still very much a working dog. They are high-octane athletes that love to run and play outside.
An American Corgi is a crossbreed between a Pembroke Corgi and a Cardigan Corgi. This unique breed was created by crossing two breeds that have been around for centuries. Some breeders are striving to produce puppies with the Cardigan Corgi’s distinctive merle coat pattern, but with the Pembroke’s physical build.
As a working breed, Corgis are intelligent and respond well to training. This is especially true with proper obedience training. They love to be entertained with puzzles and games throughout the day and can be very social animals. However, with the right attitude and plenty of patience, Corgis can be a very successful breed.
For breeders and businesses in the Uptown Puppies Network, taking care of their puppies starts before they’re even born. Comprehensive vet checks are a requirement to join this community and help give you peace of mind. Breeders take their dogs’ health very seriously, so most will require new owners to take them to the vet as soon as they arrive at your home.
Do you have room in your life for a Corgi? If so, there’s little reason NOT to get a Corgi. Corgis are fantastic companions for both solo dog lovers and families of all sizes. Instead of asking “should I get a Corgi,” ask yourself “how many hours per day can I devote to caring for my Corgi?”
Corgis traditionally were bred as farm dogs. Because their tails could easily get caught in the machinery, breeders began cutting off their tails to keep them safe when working on the farm. Although today most Corgis are companion dogs, traditional standards for Pembroke Welsh Corgis maintain the docked tail.
There is a bit of truth to this—in fact, it is recommended that you keep your Corgi away from stairs until they are at least 8 months old. However, this doesn’t mean that they can’t get up them – in fact, they may be able to do so sooner than you think! Corgis are still developing physically and stairs could potentially hurt their spines.
Your Corgi puppy is genetically predisposed to being a loving, loyal companion. Left unchecked, Corgis will want to be near anyone and everyone they come into contact with. Proper training can help discourage herding behavior, but it is important to remember that Corgis are descendants of herding dogs and will likely have some inclination towards this trait. Due to their nature as companions, most households with young children should not bring home a Corgi.
Corgis are a popular breed for people who enjoy crossing breeds with each other to create puppies that exhibit the characteristics of both parents. Some popular Corgi crosses include the Coroodle (Poodle + Corgi) and Corgle (Beagle + Corgi), but there are dozens more!
