Questions & Answers
Aussiedoodles are a mixed breed, also known as a designer breed, first bred in the U.S. in the 1990s. The Aussiedoodle is a cross of the Australian Shepherd and the standard or miniature Poodle. As a result, they have a range of sizes, with some being large and others small. Aussiedoodles can be a wavy to curly coat, and they often have a mixture of colors and markings similar to those of the Australian Shepherd. They can be loyal and friendly family pets who are intelligent, loving, and energetic.
Aussiedoodles can sometimes cause allergies, but this is not always the case. An allergy-prone person should always speak with their healthcare provider and/or allergist before considering an Aussiedoodle. Allergies can be triggered by contact with a dog's dander, saliva, and urine, all of which could affect an allergy-prone individual. While crossbreeds, such as the Aussiedoodle, may have less sheds and be less likely to cause allergies, one should take extra precautions when evaluating their individual health situation.
Aussiedoodles, like all other dogs, thrive on a balanced diet of quality proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. A nutritious, species-appropriate diet is the best way to provide your Aussiedoodle with the energy they need to stay healthy and active. While there are a lot of recommended commercial dog food brands, if you opt for a homemade diet for your Aussiedoodle make sure to include high-quality sources of protein such as beef, chicken, fish, lamb, and eggs.
To become the best puppy parent for your Aussiedoodle, there are a few important tips to keep in mind. Consistency is key when it comes to teaching your pup. Try to stick to one particular way for disciplining, training, and playing with your pup. It is also important to establish boundaries and create a specific routine for your pup that you follow. Allow your pup to know that you are their leader and that you provide guidance and direction for them. Establish a structured and fun daily routine with potty breaks, playtime, and even a designated time for naps.
Aussiedoodles can come in many different sizes, ranging from toy size to a full-grown adult size. They tend to be medium-sized, weighing approximately 15 to 50 pounds, with males being slightly larger than females. Toy Aussiedoodles may reach a height of 14 inches and weigh up to 15 pounds, whereas the standard Aussiedoodles typically reach heights of 18 to 21 inches and weigh 40-50 pounds. Miniature Aussiedoodles usually reach heights of 13 to 15 inches and weight 25-35 pounds.
Aussiedoodles require a considerable amount of daily exercise to stay healthy and fit. Depending on the size of your Aussiedoodle, as well as any specific health conditions, a daily walk or two of at least 30 minutes is often recommended. Most Aussiedoodles, however, will need more exercise than this to get the full benefits. For example, they should be exposed to varied activities such as running, swimming, and dog agility for additional mental and physical stimulation. If possible, try to break up multiple shorter exercise sessions throughout the day that would last around 10 minutes each.
Aussiedoodles generally get along with other pets in the household. However, as with any new pet, it is best to introduce them slowly and supervise them during interactions. Like all dogs, they may have some fear of or aggression towards strange animals, but with proper socialization and training, they can learn to adjust to their environment. For successful introductions, start by providing a place where the pets can both feel safe and secure; this way, they will be more comfortable meeting each other.
Training an Aussiedoodle takes time and dedication, but the amount of minutes per day can vary depending on their age and energy levels. Generally speaking, puppies 3 months and up should receive 30-60 minutes of exercise each day, either in the form of play or structured training. Adults should receive at least 20 minutes of play/training a day with active activities dispersed throughout the day. All sessions should be kept short, positive, and fun for best results, and can be broken up into multiple sessions, if need be.
