Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is an entertaining hybrid breed of a Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle. They are a mix of the wise and good-natured Bernese Mountain Dogs with the hypoallergenic coat and intelligence of a poodle. Bernedoodles are small to medium-sized dogs and often have an increased lifespan of 12-15 years. They are loyal, affectionate, and eager to please, making them great family dogs. They inherit unique coat coloring from their parents and often become very low shedding dogs.
Bernedoodles have wonderfully unique coats that can vary significantly in texture, density, and look, depending on their parent breeds. Generally speaking, their fur is short to medium in length and curly to wavy in texture. As hybrid breeds, Bernedoodles can display a wide range of coat colors as well, such as black and white, black and tan, charity, and black tri. Many Bernedoodles grow a light undercoat during the winter that helps keep them warm, and this often sheds during the summer months.
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed, so they can benefit from a diet that includes raw, natural foods. For the best results, look for a high-quality dog food that has been specifically designed for Bernedoodles or a breed that is similar in size and structure. Make sure the food contains plenty of lean proteins, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and dietary fiber. It's also important to supplement your dog's diet with fresh fruits and vegetables as a snack or meal supplement. Also, remember to adjust your Bernedoodle's diet over time as they grow and develop.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, you should make sure to purchase some essential items. As with any pet, it's a good idea to have food and water dishes, a comfortable bed, and a strong, durable leash and collar. Training tools such as interactive toys, a clicker for reward-based training, and appropriately-sized crates will prove invaluable when you start teaching your new pup basic obedience. You'll also need to invest in grooming supplies such as a stainless steel brush, comb, and scissors, as Bernedoodles need to be groomed regularly.
Bernedoodles are known to be one of the bigger breeds of doodles. Generally, their size is a combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog parent breed and the Poodle parent breed, both of which are larger breeds. Thus, the Bernedoodle typically ranges in size from mini to standard, though the average is about 45 to 90lbs and 20 to 29 inches tall. The biggest Bernedoodles can reach the size of a small horse, but this is not common. Generally, with good nutrition and exercise, Bernedoodles will reach full size by 18 months old.
Bernedoodles need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. As they are an active breed, they are best suited to a home where they will have plenty of opportunities to run, play and expend energy throughout the day. A Bernedoodle should have at least 60 minutes of exercise every day, which could be in the form of walks, jogs, swims, hikes, games, or toys that encourage active play. Additionally, it is important to offer mental stimulation with activities such as agility, training, puzzle toys and brain games.
Bernedoodles are a wonderful breed that is known for their affectionate and friendly nature. They are highly trainable and thrive on positive reinforcement techniques, so they can be a great fit for most families, particularly those with children. Depending on the particular personality of the dog, they can make excellent playmates as they are typically very tolerant and gentle with children. They are also known for their low-shedding coat, which can be less irritating for those with allergies or those who don't want pet hair all over the house.
It is recommended that Bernedoodles receive at least 20 to 30 minutes of daily training and exercise to help keep them healthy, happy and well-behaved. To ensure your Bernedoodle is getting enough exercise and stimulation, it is recommended to split training sessions into multiple shorter sessions of 10 to 15 minutes each throughout the day. This will help keep your Bernedoodle focused and attentive during each session, making the training process more effective.
