Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are classified as a crossbreed between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. When bred together, these two quite different breeds create a unique hybrid which demonstrates many of the best qualities from both. Because of its parentage, it enjoys a moderate activity level, is smart and eager to please, and is low on shedding and dander. The Bernedoodle also gets the benefit of hybrid vigor, and boasts a long lifespan.
Bernedoodles are known to be low to non-shedding as their coats tend to be wavy, silky, and soft. The thickness and texture of their coats can vary depending on the genes inherited from their Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents. While Bernedoodles don't always stay completely non-shedding, they typically shed minimally compared to other breeds. On average, Bernedoodles only shed its dead undercoat, so you can largely keep the fur clean and manageable with regular brushing and grooming.
Bernedoodles have specific dietary needs, much like their poodle and Bernese mountain dog ancestors. It's important to provide your Bernedoodle with a high quality dog food that is rich in protein and fiber. Consider a food that is formulated for large breed dogs, as Bernedoodles tend to be quite large. It's also important to find a food that is low in fat, as high fat diets are not good for this breed. You may want to look for a food that contains glucosamine and chondroitin, as these will help to support healthy joint function.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Bernedoodle involves being as prepared as possible. Make sure that you have all the necessary equipment such as a bed, crate, blankets, food, leash, treats, toys, and grooming supplies. Learn about good nutrition for puppies so that you can feed your future pup the best diet possible. Obtain any necessary permits, vaccinations, and insurance you'll need. Educate yourself about crate training and housebreaking, as well as how to teach good puppy manners so your Bernedoodle will become a wellbehaved pet.
Bernedoodles are often classified as medium to large-sized dogs depending on their parents' size. Generally, they grow to be between 35-100lbs at maturity and are considered a “hybrid” breed. Bernedoodles bred with a Miniature Poodle will be much smaller than one bred with a Standard Poodle, so size range can vary greatly. Depending on the size of the dog, they could be considered a large breed or a small-medium breed. Some Bernedoodles can be quite large and some might be closer to a medium-sized breed.
Absolutely! Taking your Bernedoodle running is an excellent way to exercise with your pup and teach them to love exercise. However, it typically isn't recommended for Bernedoodle puppies until they are closer to a year old when their bones are better developed and they can handle more rigorous activity. When your dog is old enough, it's important to make sure that they are healthy and that their vaccinations are up to date. Additionally, running in areas with extreme heat or cold should be avoided to keep your pup safe and comfortable.
Bernedoodles can be excellent family dogs as they are loyal, loving, and affectionate. They have a zest for living and often run, play, and explore. Bernedoodles love spending time interacting with their humans making them an ideal companion for children. They are smart and learn quickly making them easy to train. These dogs are also gentle, patient, and tolerant making them great to be around for extended periods of time. Bernedoodles do require regular exercise and strong boundaries to thrive so it is important to have a consistent routine.
Training a Bernedoodle requires patience and consistency, but can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. This breed is known for being loyal and eager to please their owners, which makes them especially trainable. An important part of training a Bernedoodle is finding the right approach that works for both you and your pup. Start by teaching basic commands like staying, sit, down, and leave it. Pleading and rewarding based on positive reinforcement is usually the best way to get the desired result. Establishing a routine for your Bernedoodle is also key to successful training.
