Bernedoodles are an incredibly interesting hybrid breed, combining the intelligence and sociability of a Poodle with the calm nature and low-shedding coat of a Bernese Mountain Dog. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Bernedoodles is how incredibly versatile they are; they are highly trainable, making them great active family dogs, but they also tend to be need more activity and stimulation than just a traditional lap dog, so they can fit into a variety of scenarios. Because of their size, Bernedoodles can also be therapy dogs, providing emotional support to those in need.
The Bernedoodle coat is a cross between Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, so it can have various looks and qualities. Typically, their coat is thick and wavy with a combination of black, white or brown colors, although some Bernedoodles have a single solid or mostly solid color. Their coats are medium to long in length, with an affable and soft feel. They also don't shed a lot and produce less dander, making them hypoallergenic, ideal for people with allergies.
Bernedoodles, as with any breed, have dietary needs that should be tailored to the individual dog. They should be fed a high quality, nutritionally-balanced diet appropriate for their age, size and activity level. Generally, the smallest Bernedoodles are Miniature Bernedoodles, weighing 10-25 pounds, with a height of 12-17 inches. The larger is Standard Bernedoodles, weighing 25-50 pounds, with a height of 18-23 inches. In between, you can find Medium Bernedoodles that weigh between 25-49 pounds, and range in height from 17-22 inches.
Walking a Bernedoodle for the recommended amount of exercise per day depends on the individual dog's overall activity level, age, health, and size. Generally speaking, it is recommended that a Bernedoodle receive at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise every day. This should include a combination of physical activities, such as a brisk walk, a game of fetch, and/ or a stimulating play session. If possible, it is best to divide the exercise into two 15-minute sessions to ensure that your Bernedoodle receives the necessary mental stimulation as well as physical activity.
