Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed of dog that's a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The Bernedoodle is a devoted, loyal, and intelligent companion who quickly bonds with its family. This breed is often described as a gentle giant that's eager to please and always happy. Physically, the Bernedoodle has a prominent, square-shaped head, along with a snow white coat in some varieties. While this breed can be moderate to high energy, they're also quite friendly and usually suited to family life.
The Bernedoodle coat is a unique combination of a Bernese Mountain Dog's long, fluffy, and silky coat and a Poodle's curly and hypoallergenic fur. Generally speaking, they are a low-to-no-shedding breed. Depending on whether your Bernedoodle is a F1 (first generation) or an F1B (backcross) will determine the texture and curl pattern of its coat. With a F1, you can expect a completely unpredictably coat, sporting anywhere between a wavy and curly pattern.
Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle so they have very different dietary needs. Generally, these dogs are active and require a diet rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients. Talk to your Veterinarian or an experienced nutrition professional to get recommendations on what kind of food, amounts, and frequency is best for your pet. You may want to consider a high quality, grain-free kibble, as grains are not a natural part of dogs’ diets.
Prepare for your new Bernedoodle by researching their breed characteristics and talk to an experienced Bernedoodle owner, breeder, and/or groomer to learn more about Bernedoodles. Consider enrolling your pup in an obedience class and familiarize yourself with positive reinforcement techniques. Make sure to have the right food, a comfortable bed, crate, toys, and treats ready for when your pup arrives. Set up a vet visit and discuss nutrition, vaccinations, and parasite prevention.
Bernedoodles come in a few different sizes ranging from Miniature to Standard. Miniature Bernedoodles usually weigh between 18-30 pounds and reach heights between 14-17 inches. Medium Bernedoodles average between 30-45 pounds and reach heights between 17-20 inches. Standard Bernedoodles range in size from 45-85 pounds and can reach heights between 18.5-23.5 inches. As you can see, regardless or the size, Bernedoodles make wonderful, loving, family pets.
It is recommended that you walk your Bernedoodle for at least 30 minutes per day in order to ensure that they get proper exercise so that they can stay healthy and happy. The more your Bernedoodle walks, the better. A brisk paced walk of about 20 minutes at least twice a day is ideal for a Bernedoodle. Not only will proper exercise help to keep them healthy physically, it will also help them stay mentally alert and engaged.
Bernedoodles are typically known for getting along with children, making them an ideal choice for families. They have a gentle and loving nature that makes them great companions for kids. Many Bernedoodle owners have reported that their pups quickly bond with the family and often become best friends with their children. Bernedoodles are typically patient and gentle, and are willing to play along with whatever a child's imagination comes up with. With proper training, Bernedoodles also learn how to interact properly with kids and can make sure your little ones stay safe and out of harm's way.
The amount of time you need to train your Bernedoodle each day will vary, depending on a few different factors. Age, experience level, and temperament all play a role in how much time should be devoted to training each day. Generally, daily sessions should be relatively short and focused on one skill or behavior. A good rule of thumb is between 15 and 20 minutes per day; however, this can go up or down depending on the particular training goals you have, and age or experience-level of your Bernedoodle.
