Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid cross between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, first developed in 2003. They are intelligent, active, loyal, and loving dogs with unique traits from their parent breeds. Fun facts about Bernedoodles include that they are non-shedding, so they are great for those that suffer from allergies, and require minimal grooming. They also tend to have a great sense of humor, are highly adaptable, and can quickly become a part of the family. They are also known for their good temperaments, making them a gentle companion for active lifestyles.
Bernedoodles are often labeled as low-shedding dogs due to their combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. While it is true that Bernedoodles usually shed less than other breeds, it is important to understand that every Bernedoodle is unique and may even shed no more or more than other breeds. It is best to research the breeder you are looking to purchase from to make sure you are getting a Bernedoodle with the traits you are looking for.
Bernedoodles typically eat a combination of kibble and wet or raw food. However, exact dietary needs depend on age, size, and health of the individual dog. For instance, puppies need food that's higher in calories and fat to support growth whereas switching elderly Bernedoodles to seniors food may help promote healthy aging. Dry kibble is the most convenient and cost-effective choice for the majority of Bernedoodles. Ideally, it should include meat as the first ingredient, as well as fiber-rich carbohydrates. Protein content between 20 and 30 percent is generally recommended.
Bernedoodles typically require regular brushing and grooming to keep their coat well maintained and healthy. Additionally, Bernedoodles need plenty of exercise and playtime with their owners on a daily basis to stay active and prevent boredom. Bernedoodles can also be prone to separation anxiety so owners might need to limit alone time or make sure their pet is properly socialized and stimulated. Furthermore, Bernedoodles may need behavior monitoring and possibly even training or classes to ensure they are wellmannered and not destructive when pent up in the house or in their kennel.
Bernedoodles are generally considered to be medium-to-large dogs, though much can depend on the parent breeds. On average, Bernedoodles reach from 20 to 30 inches in height and weigh between 50 to 90 pounds, although this can vary with each individual pup. When compared to other breeds of a similar size and stature, Bernedoodles can sometimes appear larger due to their shaggy and fluffy fur. Some Bernedoodles may even have double coats, further contributing to their large and fluffy appearance.
Bernedoodles are energetic and active dogs. They love to play and have an incredible amount of energy. While a Bernedoodle won't require the same level of exercise as some of their relatives, they still need physical and mental stimulation. Bernedoodles are smart and eager to please, and they need both structured and unstructured activity to stay mentally and physically healthy. Exercise activities like walks, hikes, jogs, and games of fetch will help satisfy their need for physical activity. Additionally, mental stimulation can be provided through activities such as agility, puzzles, and other brain games.
Bernedoodles make wonderful family dogs! Not only are they loving and playful, but they're also incredibly intelligent and loyal. They often develop strong bonds with their owners and make a great companion for children of all ages. Bernedoodles thrive in a home environment and can easily adapt to the daily routine of a family. They can also provide plenty of exercise running in the yard, playing ball, groomed regularly, and walked daily. In addition, Bernedoodles are quite low-maintenance, being relatively healthy dogs with minimal grooming needs.
Training a Bernedoodle is not very different from training other pets. The key elements of successful training are patience, consistency, praise, and lots of positive reinforcement. Begin the training as soon as possible and start with basic commands like “sit” and “stay”. Use treats or toys to reward successful behaviors. Although Bernedoodles are smart, they may require additional training to learn more complicated behaviors. Have patience and do not get frustrated when progress is slow. Utilize short training sessions that won’t overwhelm your Bernedoodle.
