Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed created by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. They are becoming increasingly popular for their intelligence, social qualities, and low-shedding coats. Also, they have the classic teddy bear look, with their gentle eyes and round faces. Some fun facts about Bernedoodles include that they have the highest life expectancy of any Doodle breed (12 to 14 years), they make excellent therapy and service dogs, and they can excel at a variety of activities such as agility, obedience, and therapy work.
The Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed developed by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. Its coat is often double-layered, with its wiry exterior, and a soft and woolly undercoat. Depending on the genetic contributions from its two parent breeds, the Bernedoodle coat may be truly unique on an individual basis. Its coat has a diverse range of textures and comes in a variety of colors, from deep black or chocolate, to apricot, beige, cream, and even combinations of these shades.
Bernedoodles typically eat high quality dog food formulated for large breeds. When it comes to specific foods, it's important to look for those that provide the necessary nutrition for their sizes. If not given the proper amount of nutrition, they can become overweight and lazy. It's also important to provide a mix of dry and wet foods for these breeds, as they need a balanced amount of both to maintain their good health. Treats should be limited to avoid digestive upset, and treats should be chosen carefully with your Bernedoodle's individual health needs in mind.
Bernedoodles, as with any pet, have basic needs. Generally, they require regular care in terms of diet, exercise, socialization, and health care. Their diet consists of quality food that meets all their nutritional needs, and they need to be trained, and given exercises on walks and playtime. Additionally, they need lots of socialization so that they do not develop separation anxiety. Finally, they need routine check-ups from the vet to maintain their health and prevent any illnesses.
Bernedoodles vary in size depending on the type of Bernedoodle. Generally speaking, miniature Bernedoodles, which are the smallest type of Bernedoodle, range in size from 18-22 inches and typically weigh between 18 and 35 pounds. Standard Bernedoodles range in size from 22-29 inches and can weigh between 40 and 70 pounds. Maxi Bernedoodles, which are the largest type of Bernedoodle, usually size out between 25-35 inches tall and can weigh as much as 90 pounds or more.
Absolutely! If your Bernedoodle is physically and developmentally ready, taking them running can be an effective way to get in some exercise. Make sure to take your Bernedoodle on walks beforehand and build up to longer distances for running. Be sure to check with your veterinarian to be sure your pup is ready for the physical demands of running. When out running, take frequent stops to make sure your pup is staying hydrated and to provide potty breaks to keep them comfortable. Additionally, always use a secure harness or vest with a leash that is comfortable and won't rub or chafe.
Bernedoodles are well known for being excellent companions for both adults and children. These dogs tend to be gentle, friendly, and obedient, making them a great addition to any family with children. Bernedoodles are intelligent, loving, and have a laid-back personality which allows them to get along well with people of all ages. They also make great playmates for kids-being able to keep up with them while playing chase or a game of fetch, and also being patient enough to teach them the basics of being around and caring for a pet.
The amount of time you need to devote to training your Bernedoodle will depend largely on the behavior you are trying to modify and the age of the dog. Puppies taken younger than 10 weeks of age should aim for at least 15 minutes per day of focused training, while those taken later in life should increase that to 30 minutes per day. Older Bernedoodles will require a larger amount of time as well up to an hour or more per day can be necessary for some. It also pays to include ten to fifteen minutes of play time every day.
