Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are generally considered to be a hybrid or designer breed, as they are a combination of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The amount of influence of each breed in the hybrid will generally depend on whether the Bernedoodle is a first, second, or third-generation cross. Regardless of generation, all Bernedoodles possess some combination of characteristics from both of their parent breeds, typically in the form of intelligence, moderate activity levels, and a gentle, loving personality. The breed can range in size and coat type depending on the parents used in the cross.
Bernedoodles are a hybrid cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. Due to their non-shedding curled fur, they are considered a low-shedding breed. The Bernedoodle's coat ranges from soft and wavy to tight curls and it almost always comes in black, white, and tan colors. While Bernedoodles are known for being low-shedding, they do experience seasonal shedding and will require regular brushing and grooming to keep their coats tangle-free and healthy looking.
Bernedoodles usually have average dietary needs, though, like any breed, they can be prone to certain dietary sensitivities, such as allergies. Bernedoodles are generally seen as being a very healthy breed and benefit from a balanced diet with moderate levels of protein to support muscle and joint health. High-quality kibble is ideal for Bernedoodles, but wet foods, home-cooked meals and raw diets are also options that can be tailored to the individual dietary needs of the Bernedoodle.
Before you bring home your new Bernedoodle, you should prepare your home to make sure it's a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for your pup. Begin by evaluating the space to make sure it is free from potential hazards, especially any small objects that may be poisonous or pieces that may be swallowed. Also, check for any sharp objects that may cut paws. Next, decide on a limited area of the home where your pup can safely explore and be supervised. Set up a den, bed, and food bowls in this area.
Bernedoodles typically range in size from mini to standard, so their size can vary greatly. Generally, mini Bernedoodles are smaller and weigh around 18-30 lbs. Standard Bernedoodles can weigh as much as 70 pounds, making them medium-large sized dogs. Thus, it depends on the size of the Bernedoodle as to whether they would be considered big or not. If you get a standard Bernedoodle, they will be considered a bigger breed dog, but if you get a mini Bernedoodle, they may be considered a small breed dog.
Bernedoodles are known for their love of water and swimming. In fact, they often have a natural inclination towards water and taking swims in the lake or ocean. They have a thick, waterproof double coat that helps keep them warm and dry in the water and also helps them stay afloat. It is important to properly introduce a Bernedoodle to the water, but they usually take to it quickly and enjoy their swims. Swimming is a great source of exercise and mental stimulation for Bernedoodles and allows them to release any excess energy they may have.
Bernedoodles often make wonderful companions for families with children. They are highly social and tend to develop strong bonds with their people, making them great family pets. They have a great temperament and enjoy being active and playing. Bernedoodles prefer to have company, and get along well with kids. They are gentle and patient, with a soft, loving nature that makes them the perfect addition to any home. Their intelligence also makes them great playmates for children, as they can understand basic commands.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training Bernedoodles each day will depend on the individual dog and the goals you have in mind. Generally speaking, a good recommendation is to spend 10-15 minutes per day on basic obedience exercises like sit, stay, and come, and then spend 10-15 minutes on activities like agility, fetch, and frisbee. Additionally, it is important to make sure you are taking the time to properly socialize your Bernedoodle pup so that it grows up well-mannered.
