Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer breed that combines the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. They are an intelligent breed that easily learn tricks and commands. In addition, this breed tends to have an easy-going, friendly temperament and are known to be quite loyal. Bernedoodles are hypoallergenic and low-shedding, making them a great option for those with allergies. They can range in size from Toy (10-24 pounds) to Standard (50-100 pounds) depending on their parents.
Bernedoodles are known for their attractive coats. Their coats are a unique mixture of both Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle fur characteristics. The fur usually has a soft texture which is somewhere between that of a straight-haired breed and a curly-haired breed, though it can be either straight or curly. Bernedoodles often have colors of black, white and brown.
Bernedoodles, a crossbreed between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, may have different dietary needs depending on their genetic make-up. Pets with a dominant gene for the Poodle side may require a higher protein diet than the puppy's natural tendency, which is usually toward a higher fat diet. If your Bernedoodle is high in Bernese Mountain Dog genes, they may need a certain diet to account for their lower metabolism and their tendency toward becoming overweight.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle requires some special steps. First, make sure you have the right supplies on hand such as a cozy bed, appropriate toys, food and water bowls, and a sturdy leash and collar. Other important items may include puppy gates to keep your puppy in safe areas and basic grooming tools. Next, create a safe, quiet spot for your Bernedoodle to rest and escape from the hustle and bustle of family life. Finally, puppy-proof your home and yard by checking for any potential hazards related to chewable items, electrical cords, etc.
Bernedoodles can reach a variety of sizes, depending on the parentage of the pup. Generally Bernedoodles range from miniature about 20-30 pounds to large, up to 90 pounds. As a mix of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, Bernedoodles may also be considered a medium-sized dog, usually falling between 50-70 pounds. Bernedoodles come in a wide variety of colors and tend to have wavy to curly coats that require regular grooming.
Your Bernedoodle will likely need at least 60 minutes of exercise each day to stay healthy and active. Exercise can come in many forms, such as walking, running, playing fetch, exploring in a fenced-in yard, or swimming, so you have some flexibility with your Bernedoodle's daily exercise. Walking your Bernedoodle for at least 45 minutes can be a great source of both physical and mental stimulation. Be sure to establish a consistent routine for your pup and vary the terrain and path as much as you can.
Bernedoodles are generally great for first-time owners. Thanks to their patient nature and loyalty, Bernedoodles are often considered excellent family dogs and can make great companions for novice pet owners. They are very gentle, so you will not have to worry about any aggressive behavior; in fact, their congenial nature helps them adjust to newcomers quickly and become great family pets. Additionally, this breed requires minimal grooming, which is benefical to novice pet owners since it requires less upkeep.
Training a Bernedoodle can be a rewarding but demanding process. While Bernedoodles are generally smart and eager to please, they still require a firm and consistent approach. It may take time and patience to teach them how to behave, but it is achievable. All owners need to have a good understanding of their needs and the right training techniques to communicate expectations. Adding training as a regular part of their routine is also essential. The most important factor to keep in mind is that positive reinforcement is key to encouraging desired behaviours.
