Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles may be an ideal lapdog, but they've got more substance than one might expect! For starters, they're able to trace their ancestry back hundreds of years. They actually descended from the infamous toy spaniel called the "Spaniel Gentle". Another fascinating fact is that in the early 16th century, King Charles II of England made it his mission to encourage breeding programs for the purpose of protecting the breed's lineage. Even today, it's common for the breed to be kept in royal households.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered hypoallergenic, meaning they are not a breed that is known for producing fewer allergens than other breeds. While not all dogs produce allergens that affect people, some people may be more sensitive to allergens present in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels than other breeds, such as the Poodle or the Bichon Frise. If you have allergies or sensitivities, it is recommended that you consult your doctor or a veterinarian prior to introducing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel into your home.
Feeding your Cavalier King Charles is an important part of helping them lead a healthy and active lifestyle. It is recommended to feed them a high-quality complete and balanced diet made with real ingredients such as flesh proteins, vegetables, and grains. The portion size should be based on their age, weight, and individual needs but should generally consist of two meals per day. Add fresh water each day, as well as healthy snacks such as fresh fruit and vegetables (cut into small pieces) and cooked-meat treats. Avoid giving them too many treats as these can easily lead to weight gain.
An important part of preparing your home for your new Cavalier King Charles is making sure their environment is comfortable and safe. Begin by puppy-proofing your home and yard by removing potentially dangerous objects, cords, and plants. Create a dedicated space for their food and bedding. Ensure the area is easy for them to access. Make sure their sleeping area is warm enough with a comfortable, pet-safe bed or cushion. Provide plenty of safe, pet toys for hours of entertainment.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four sizes toy, miniature, small, and large. Toy, miniature, and small sizes range in weight from 4-14 pounds, and the large size can range from 15-20 pounds. The English Kennel Club has officially recognized four sizes, however, the American Kennel Club has only recognized two sizes. The two sizes in the United States are toy and small. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is known for its characteristic loving nature, a trait that is evident no matter the size.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need moderate exercise on a regular basis in order to stay healthy. An hour-long leisurely walk or play session every day is recommended. Owners can also incorporate mental exercises, such as learning and practicing tricks, as this is an important part of the breed's daily activity. If Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not given enough exercise they can become overweight, resulting in problems with their joints and other physical difficulties. Therefore, providing a proper level of exercise is essential to maintain the health and happiness of Cavaliers.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeds get along well with other animals when they are properly socialized. They tend to be quite friendly, as they have a wonderful temperament that makes them adaptable to most situations. If they are raised around other animals such as cats or dogs, they usually get along great from the start. With that said, introductions should still be done slowly and carefully as to not overwhelm either animal, and it's important to maintain calm and be patient during the introductions.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be smart dogs. It is true that they do require consistent, dedicated training in order to reach their full potential in learning and obedience but, with the right guidance, they are known to be quite intelligent. They have been observed to learn commands and tricks quickly and with enthusiasm, displaying a great capacity for understanding. Loyalty and responsiveness are other key traits of this breed but they also have the unique capability to bond strongly with their humans, making them a special and intelligent addition to the family.
