Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles is a breed of small toy spaniel known for its excellent temperament and friendly disposition. It is a gentle and loyal companion that seeks companionship from its owners, often following them from room to room. This breed has a long history, having been established in Britain in the 1600s as a lap-dog and companion for royal families and the aristocracy. Today, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels excel in various canine sports and activities like agility and rally and make exceptional therapy dogs.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel typically has a long, silky coat that can be either flat or have a slight wave. They are usually found in ruby, black and tan, or Blenheim (chestnut and white) coloring. The coat is so luxurious that it needs daily grooming to keep it looking its best. The long ears have a slight feathering, as well as the extra long feathering on the tail and hind legs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not be given any human food containing table scraps, onion, garlic, and salt as these could make them very ill. Feeding them bones, certain dairy products, excess fat, avocados, raw shrimp, raw eggs, greasy foods, chocolate, or grapes is also not recommended. Furthermore, long-time commercial dog foods that contain questionable ingredients, such as fillers or artificial additives, should be avoided.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs can fit into many different types of lifestyles, however, they do have a few special requirements. It's important to note that multi-dog households are not recommended for Cavalier King Charles; they are known to be a single-dog breed. Additionally, they require a good amount of exercise to stay in peak health so it is helpful to have a large, secure yard for running and playing. Furthermore, they require regular grooming to maintain their famously beautiful silky coats. This could include regular brushing, occasional trimming, and monthly baths.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small dogs ranging from about 12 to 13 inches in height and up to 18 pounds in weight. The breed standard for these dogs requires that the size of the breed falls within a range that is adequate for a pleasing proportion and balance. As such, there are no particular sizes these dogs can come in, apart from the accepted range specified in the breed standard. It is important to view the parent animals prior to selecting a particular puppy from the litter, as size does have a large impact on the way the puppy will look and develop.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an active breed that require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Depending on the age of the pet, amount of exercise they require may vary. Generally, puppies will need at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, while an adult dog should have around 45 minutes to an hour of exercise per day. Exercise can include taking long walks, playing at an enclosed doggy park, swimming, or jogging with the dog in a safe area.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for being friendly, gentle, and affectionate, so much so that they make excellent family pets. They also tend to have an incredibly loving and loyal relationship with children. Therefore, generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along great with kids and are a great addition to a home with children. With the proper care, training, and socialization, these dogs can live harmoniously and happily with kids of all ages.
Training your Cavalier King Charles requires plenty of patience and consistency. Develop a schedule and use positive reinforcement techniques. Start with basic commands such as sit, come, and down. As they get better, you can add more complex commands. Make sure to keep training sessions short and fun to help keep your dog's interest level up. Use treats, toys, and praise as rewards for good behavior and when your dog responds correctly. If your Dog is having trouble understanding a command, break it down into smaller steps and be sure to reward with frequent and consistent praise.
