Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small spaniel breed known for its sweet, gentle nature and bright, outgoing temperament. It is a small and well-built breed, with a long silky coat that comes in four colors Blenheim (reddish-brown and white), Tricolor (black, white and tan), Ruby (rich mahogany) and Black and Tan. It is a sturdy breed that is easy to groom and maintain, allowing them to be excellent family pets or therapy dogs for those in need.
While there are indeed different reactions to being around Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, it is very unlikely that an allergy to the breed would develop. Studies have shown that the coat of the breed is hypoallergenic, meaning that the proteins that can cause allergic reactions to certain breeds are not found in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Despite this, some individuals may experience mild allergic reactions due to contact with the breed. However, if such an allergy is suspected, it's always best to seek a professional diagnosis and seek to fulfill medical needs due to allergy issues.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not be fed any type of human food such as table scraps, garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, chocolate, avocados, milk, eggs, macadamia nuts, or fatty meat as they can all cause indigestion in these dogs. Additionally, feeding them foods or treats that contain wheat, corn or soy can lead to allergies. While dental chews are an excellent way to help keep teeth clean, they can contain sugar which is not beneficial for this breed.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, you should make sure to purchase some essentials to ensure their health and safety. For instance, you should buy sturdy playpens and beds to ensure they have somewhere comfortable and safe to sleep. Essentials for every new pup include high-quality food, a veterinarian-approved collar and leash, disposable waste bags, a grooming brush, toys or chewables, and a proper ID tag. It is also important to have dog proofed your home, meaning that all potential hazards have been removed, as well as purchasing a crate in case of any emergency.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small Toy breed typically weighing between 10-18 pounds when fully grown. They often reach heights between 12-13 inches, and their silky coat and gentle expression make them one of the most beloved of all breeds. When it comes to size, though, Cavaliers still have some surprising variation. Some larger Cavaliers may reach heights up to 15 inches or even weigh as much as 20 pounds as adults. However, for the most part, the breed's official standard is that Cavaliers should stay under a certain weight and height so they can qualify for show rings and competitions.
Taking your Cavalier King Charles running is an option, but it is not ideal for this type of breed. The breed has a history of being a lapdog, and running is not something that comes naturally to them. However, if you take the time to introduce your Cavalier King Charles to regular exercise slowly and gradually, you may be able to safely incorporate running into its physical activity routine. It is best to start with lighter exercises such as walking or short jogs and increase the intensity very gradually with guidance from your veterinarian. Additionally, always offer a break when the dog appears tired.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a wonderful breed of dog, and they tend to get along very well with kids. Cavaliers are known for their gentle nature and sweet dispositions, making them an ideal candidate to be around children. They love to be around people, and are known for their strong loyalty and deep affection, so they can become devoted companions to small children. As with any pet, supervision is recommended when an animal and child are interacting, but the Cavaliers companionship can add a lot of enrichment to a child's life.
Training your Cavalier King Charles can be done in a few different ways. First, you will want to start with the basics. Teaching your Cavalier basic obedience commands is essential and includes commands like sit, stay, down, and come. Teaching these commands is a process but with consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement, your pup will learn these important skills relatively quickly. Along with teaching basic obedience commands, teaching your pup to walk well on a leash is also important for daily exercise and fresh air.
